Here is my position on wife beating: Wife beating is not cool, even if you are not a white man. Even brown or black men should be punished for doing it, even if their wives are not in fact white. Even if you or your wife do not speak English, and are not from North America or Europe, wife beating is quite disgraceful.

Wife beating is just not on, no matter what colour your wife is.

Shame on you wife beaters around the globe!

Do you agree, dear posters?

No. Not at all. Someone is quite cheerful, and deciding to tackle a very common (and rather absurd) criticism head on.

Couple of things to say about this topic.

First, yes, sure, I can agree with everything the OP said.

That said, there is the under-reported phenomenon of husband beating. Less prevalent, I have no doubt, but also a real issue that one rarely hears about because there's apparently more shame involved for the victim.

I have a sister who was once married to a man who, here and there, beat her. This was many years ago, when I was still a teenager. I think I'd had some idea that it had happened at least once when I saw this thing I saw that made me go, "Hmmmm."

The thing I saw was an argument between the two of them. And there was my sister in the middle of it, screaming at the top of her lungs and emotional register, "Go on, you m-f-er, hit me, you don't have f-in' balls, do you? You f-in' pu**y!"

And much more along those lines, and I thought, you know, dear sister, this may not be the best tactic to take if what you wish is not to be beaten. He did not in that instance beat her, most probably because he didn't think much of his chances since she had me there with her.

And all that said, I'm not in any way saying it's ever right for one spouse to hit another. It's always wrong. But dysfunctional relationships often go both ways. In my sister's case, she apparently quite literally asked for it.

I also realize this example in no way addresses the cultures that sort of require men to beat their wives. Apples and oranges.

Damn you Daskalos for pointing out something I'd overlooked! Razz

OK, Husband bashing is in no way acceptable, no matter what colour the husband. It's just not on! Not in any culture. Not even if the wife is muslim or speaks English funny like.

You have in fact overlooked the whole array of domestic violence.

http://www.athealth.com/Consumer/Disorders/DomViolFacts.html

"Lesbian and gay relationships have finally been granted legal recognition by the California legislature. That recognition, however, is not in the form of domestic partners legislation. It is, instead contained in new amendment of the Penal Code. A series of changes, that most recent of which went into effect in January 1995, have revised statutes on domestic violence by removing opposite-sex language and expanding the definition of cohabitant to include "unrelated adult persons" having "sexual relations." The changes will make it easier for gay and lesbian victims of domestic violence to seek assistance from the courts and police."

The victims of domestic violence can be anyone residing in the domicile.

So rather than the sexist characterizations such as wife beating and Husband beating and Partner beating.

Or even the grotesque child beatings.

Maybe to focus should be on violence itself.

"Never ever hit a girl."
(My Dad, repeated several hundred thousand times in my childhood)
