Hey
Looking for some information on getting my girlfriend a working visa for Canada. I've googled and all I could come up with was an obscure website from 2002 that said working holiday visas are only offerred to Koreans under 25. Is this the case? Is there a decent website?
The only other option I found was applying for perm res status.... we're eligible under the "common law" category since we've lived together for over a year, but after printing the required paperwork from the HRC website, I can't be fu(ked filling it all out to tell you the truth.... and we're only planning to go to Canada for 6 months so it doesn't seem worth it to have to fill out all the paperwork, pay the $1000+ fee, etc....

Anyway, I figured there must be somebody on here who has done this before that can help me.... so..... let's go..... responses please. She's 26 (international age).

Ya I knew about the tourist visa... but six months is a long time for her to be there without working, especially since I plan to work while we're there. I know she could probably get some under the table work (no jokes please) where we're going, but I wouldn't want to risk the trouble.... it would probably come back to bite us in the ass if we end up staying together and she applies for residency in the future....

The working holiday visa is available to Koreans up to the full age of 30 as part of a reciprocal agreement between the 2 countries.

Information is available on the KOREAN side of the canadian embassy website.
http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/world/embassies/korea/immigration-ko.asp

You can also get the information package by dropping into the canadian embassy 10th floor visa section between 1 and 3pm (mon, tues, thurs, fri.)

The embassy staff in the visa section tend to be rather useless and incompetant (my personal experience over the years) so you may have to try more than once to get complete accurate information.

Thanks ttompatz. You've done this before I take it? How long did the process take and what's the chance of being rejected do you think? Is there a limited number of visas available in a year?

There are a maximum of 10,000 working tourist visas issued in any given year. Two of the requirements are a detailed itinerary and a written essay on why the applicant wants to come to Canada and what they will do when they are there.

I think the application deadline is Noivember for the following calendar year. Successful applicants are notified in January to pick up their visas. The visa has a one year validity and has a period of sojourn of 1 year.

After their arrival in Canada they must, if they want to work, apply for a tenp SIN card. It takes about a month after they apply before they receive it.

=========================================

Alternatively, if she gets on an airplane and enters Canada as a tourist, she can, IF the two of you can PROVE to immigration's requirements that you meet the standard for cohabitation, apply to change her status from tourist to landed immigrant.

After she has applied to change her status she can apply for a work permit. This process takes about a year before she gets permission to work. She can remain in Canada for as long as the application is in process.

IF you decide to do this (inside application for family class immigration of a common law partner) you must remember that YOU are financially liable for her during the application process AND for 3 MORE years AFTER she becomes a landed immigrant.

If you break up and she heads to welfare, they will come after you for up to 3 years of payments and you can't get out of it through a bankruptcy. They use revenue Canada as their bill collector.

==============================================

The 3rd alernative is to just bring her along on a 6 month tourist waiver stamp, enjoy your visit and return to Korea. This stamp can be extended once to a maximum of one year in the country.
