I just got my license yesterday.

When I fell asleep studying the book the English speaking
cop took me upstairs to the test room where everyone
was studying until the test started.

The paperwork had one of my photo's on the right side with
holes punched in it and special tape. On the left side
was a sticker and one of the numbers on the sticker
is the assigned seat number.

I leaned that many Korean make the number 7 like a
lower case letter n.

Someone comes around to compare your ID to your paperwork.

They were very helpful with making sure I had the test
number and name filled out on the card and that I knew
which was A, B, C, and D on the card.

At the top and a little to the right they wrote in my test number
and another number.

The questions are on large sheets of paper in plastic sleaves.
(A3?) There was no cover sheet so I thought I could start.
I filled in two answers before the cop told me to stop and wait.
I'm still not sure what the signal to start was.

During the test a guy comes around and stamps your bubble card.

Everyone had little black marker pens. One of the cops
let loaned me one, but everyone else brought their own.
I guess they are a special kind of felt tip pen for fill in the bubble
tests. They should tell people about these marker pens.

I was the first one done which kind of scared me. I think all
the Koreans were memorizing answers from study books.
I just read the English version of the manual and noted differences
with the way we do it in the US.

When I said I was done they seemed shocked. They had me sit next to the glass booth where they ran it through the computer and I got an 85 which they said was good. That means I missed three.

I'm not exactly sure which ones I missed, but it might have been these three:

I remember one question about the penalties for driving without a license. That one gave me a chill since I had been driving for two days without one and had driven to the exam office. I chose one year of prison with hard labor.

There was one question where the answers only made sense if one of the word "may" was replaced with "should".

One question had a picture and a list of things goin on around you like crosswalk in front, boy on bicycle, car following you etc. and then you had to choose the action to take.

And someone in another thread said Koreans don't need to learn decision-making to get a license... there it is right there on the test! Wink

They were shocked when I finished in 5 minutes, too. It was sooooo easy.
A possible pass btw is just 60%.

I had a 65% on mine. In my defense, where I went there were no English manuals to study; they had a computerized version of the test in English, but no literature to help prepare.

Some of the questions were just ridiculous, I swear. "Due to the Highway Traffic Safety Act of 1977, when you're approaching a blue car with four-way flashers and there's a red car to your left that appears to be turning into the space you currently occupy, what is the maximum speed limit on most national roads?
A) Wait, a red car? In Korea?
B) 5kph
C) 100kph
D) 87kph"

I was told that an English road rules guide didn't exist... Anyway, my test was computer based. Finished in about 10 minutes with an 85%. Some of the Q & As are terribly written and some are just plain wrong!

I had a question on mine that was somthing like, "If you wish to become a village bus driver, which authority should you contact first?"

WTF is that?? Shocked

Anyway, I passed. When I asked the proctor which questions I got wrong, she looked at me like I was nuts and asked, "Why?" Shocked

We had a brief conversation about learning from your mistakes, and she kept answering, "We don't want people to know what's on the test."

I asked her, "What's more important, knowing the rules of the road and how to drive safely, or how you obtained that information?"

She had no answer. Rolling Eyes

Q. You're stopped behind a bus, there's a car coming in the opposite lane, there's a grandmother crossing the street from the left and a vegtable stand on the right hand side and there's a over-anxious taxi driver behind you. What will you do? What will you do?! What?!? (Sorry, Speed movie flashback...).

Yea, definitely some odd questions with even more confusing wording. They are very strict on issueing tests. I remember some kinda lottery system in even picking out which of several tests to hand you.

I guess they have a big problem with people using phones to take pictures of the tests or sending someone to take the test for them. I chalk it up to one of the oddest experiences I've had in Korea.

My test was 20 questions, and Cheonmunka probably didn't mean exactly five minutes.

Maybe not. But, I was on the computer and off pretty fast. I had my wife and kids waiting for me, and I had parked my car outside (no licence at that time) so I wanted to be fast. I was the last guy to get a computer and the first one off. Koreans around me were scratching their heads. I'd say, maybe 10 mins from on to off.
There were two questions which I had seen in the literature- one was about the possible five year jail term for drunken driving causing injury - click, 10 seconds - next - the blue sign with the white left turning arrow meaning 'turn left any time but cautiously,' click.
I got 90%. I think I didn't get one question about elderly driver requirements, and also one strange one about an intersection blocking rule with three choices that seemed to fit.

Rather than thinking about the strangely worded questions, better to think about the possible proper answers. For above about the warning vehicle in front, and the red car squeezing into your lane, maybe the answer would be simply, 'make room for the red car' - 10 seconds, click, next.

The point is, it was easy, fast, and nothing to be scared about. Except pushing that collate test results button at the very end but is made up when a certificate pops up with some beautiful dinging sound, as sound which made everyone around me gasp and the attendant cop say "Wow," pat my back and point me the way to the desk cop.

Was 20 questions as some nationalities need basic written, others need full licence test requirements. There are some documents about that on the licencing website.

I didn't look at the other tests. Maybe that's why everyone else

Your test was not computerized. Where did you take your test? Was it in Olga?
