Hi,

I'm flying Pusan to Beijing this weekend with Air China. I have looked at their website but it seems to give conflicting information. Does anybody know for sure how many pieces of checked baggage i'm allowed and how much each bag can weigh?

I have looked on their website but it seems to give 3 different limits according to 'checked' baggage, 'free baggage' and 'piece concept.' I'm not sure which one applies?

CARRY ON:
A .Free carry-on baggage should not exceed 10kg in weight for every first class and business class passenger, and should not exceed 5kg in weight for every economy class passenger.

CHECKED LUGGAGE:
Free Baggage Allowance
A Adults and children traveling in first class and business class can enjoy the free checked baggage allowance of 2 pieces and the maximum weight for each bag must not exceed 32kg. The sum of the three dimensions of each bag shall not exceed 158cm and the overall dimensions of the two pieces shall not exceed 273cm.
B Adults and children traveling in economy class can enjoy the free checked baggage allowance of 2 pieces and the maximum weight for each bag must not exceed 23kg. The sum of the three dimensions of each bag shall not exceed 158cm and the overall dimensions of the two pieces shall not exceed 273cm.

Yes, I read that. It also says this:

Quote:
Checked baggage
Limitation of baggage weight and volume

Weight concept

A. Each baggages maximum weight should not exceed 59kg, and its maximum dimension should not exceed 1006040cm. The baggage exceeding the above allowance should be transported as freight not baggage.

and further down it says this:

Quote:
Free baggage

A The free baggage for passenger with adult or children ticket: 40kg per first class passenger, 30 kg for business class passenger, 20kg for economy class passenger.

So i'm confused if it's 20, 32, or 59 kg for economy class. And is that per bag or total?

You get 20kg checked baggage (total) for free and the max size (as an oversize) is 59kg. You pay for anything over 20kg. This is pretty standard for almost all flights everywhere on the planet that are NOT going to/from North America.

You also get 5kg for carry-on + you can also carry a camera bag and a laptop in addition to the 5kg carry-on. (This is a tad low, most carriers let you have 7.5kg for your carry-on).

I admit their regulations are a bit confusing.

In conclusion, if you are flying Economy:

You get,

2 bags @ 20kg each.

1 carry-on @ 5kg. (which is below the avg. and really sucky, bc the avg, roller carry on weighs about 3 kgs empty)
--------------------------

1. Tip: along with your carry-on, you can carry a personal item that shouldn't be larger then a regular carry-on case (camera bag, laptop case, purse, duty free & shopping bags...(I usually have a roller type carry on that weighs at the limit. plus, i have my laptop case and even a duty free bag. Sometimes, i even put my laptop case into the carry on instead of carrying that heavy thing.

2. Tip: usually the ticket agent will weigh your carry on. bring a nice sturdy plastic bag that you can stuff a few things into, in case your carry on is a bit heavy; after you are done with the ticket agent, you can always put it back in.

3. Tip: be friendly and nice to the ticket agent, usually its to their discretion to charge you for excess weight or allowing you on with a heavy carry on. Wink

PS: the weight concept of 59kg means that NO bag should weigh more than that or else its considered cargo.

Sino-US and Sino-Canada Routes....
in plain English China/USA and China/Canada

All airlines have higher limits going to/from North America (typically 50lbs per bag and 2 bags.)

GLOBALLY most other airlines ONLY ALLOW 20kg PER PERSON for the FREE baggage allowance in Economy class to NON North American destinations.

But hey, you don't have to listen to me... feel free to pack 2 bags at 23kg each.
