Ok this is a moan.
We've had some bad stuff going down at our hagwon at the moment. Although the director comes in and occasionally looks through the windows of us when we're teaching all communication has been through her telling a korean who tells one of the waygook teachers who tells the rest of us.
Now I'm realising that I'm coming from a different society but WTF is up with this game of chinese whispers? I understand that she's just lost some face through current problems at the school and her english abilty is too crash hot. But I tried to explain to the korean teacher she's making things a million times worse by not talking to us or being present when important stuff is happening.
So aside from us en masse walking out of class when she peers through how on earth can we talk to her?

Ain't that a lemon. My director speaks little English and most communication goes through the Korean teachers. At least that way I don't argue with the director! I have the GREATEST director in the world BUT my one big knock is the total lack of communication. If I hear about things last minute that is sooner than I usually find out. What to do? What to do? This is how I cope: I remember that it is not my business, and that whatever inefficiencies result because of management tactics will cost the director in the end. Being left in the dark is just the cost of doing business AS a hogwan teacher. How to talk to a director? ABOUT WHAT? Can you be more specific? I speak to my director about my pay and my apartment. Not much more. What do you want to communicate? |

I was wondering the same thing. If I hear nothing from my boss other than "Here's your paycheck" or "There's food in the staff room for you", I'm a happy man.
One of the worst things about my old boss was that he never knew when to shut up. He would ramble on and on and on and on about nonsense bringing up his awards that he received in graduate school and the time he spent in Paris and the time a gay man invited him to dinner and he cam to the door naked and how he is not as powerful as the parents yet and you need to make the kindergarteners memorize six sentences in every class and by the way would you mind coming in on Saturdays to record some tapes for me?
I was pleased as punch when he hired a supervisor, hid in his office, and let her do all the talking.
I'm even happier to have a boss who doesn't speak English now.
Sorry, I just rambled as badly as my old boss and you did have a specific question. If the only time you see him is when he peeps in your window, and you need to speak to him about something, I'd say drop everything, stop class, and talk to your boss.
I agree though, that it would be nice to actually have a boss that tells you what's going on when you need to know about it, and that you can talk to when you need him. Why is that so difficult, anyway? |

Sounds like you could try to set up regular staff/management meetings with translator present to iron this stuff out. If you impress upon them that it'll improve the performance of the hagwon (nudge, nudge, profits!), that usually gets a receptive ear. |
