Seoul Metropolitan Police arrested two Canadians for working as English instructors with a fake bachelors degree and booked seven other foreigners and Koreans either on the same charge or for employing them. To work as an English instructor, foreigners have to get an E-2 visa permitting them to teach English in Korea. The visa is granted to applicants who have either a BA from universities in English-speaking countries or an English-language diploma from universities in non-English speaking countries.

Of the arrested Canadians, one studied only at an adult education center affiliated with a college after finishing high school. While working part-time in a fast food restaurant in Canada, he bought a fake U.S. bachelors diploma for US$300 on a U.S. website in August 2003. He came to Korea at the end of that year and started working as an English instructor for a private language institute in Songpa-gu, Seoul. The other graduated from a Canadian junior college and then worked in a factory. He came to Korea on a tourist visa in 2001 and paid US$500 to a Korean broker to buy a fake Canadian bachelors diploma in August that year. He worked as an English instructor at a language institute in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province since January 2004.

Meanwhile, police have arrested an Australian English instructor who made headlines last month by telling his Korean ex-girlfriend he was infected with the AIDS virus when she broke up with him.

Looks like the yearly crack down has begun. I saw this on MBC last night as well.

What would the Aussie teacher be charged with?

when you enter the country, on the customs/imigration card, it asks you if you have any communicable diseases like AIDS. if he has it and he lied, i think there is a huge fine and possible imprisonment time. if he lied to his GF, and he is clean, then who cares?
but that is not funny either way. if he has it, he needed to tell her, if he doesn't, that is not okay to joke about.

I think its a criminal offense to not tell someone you are involved with that you have HIV/AIDS or any other STD. If he DID have it, he should have told his girlfriend the minute they started dating. Not when they broke up.

It doesn't matter if he DOES have it or not. Lying to someone about STD's is about as stupid as saying Bomb in an airport.

They should fine the Korean Broker tons of cash and make him pay back all the profits to the parents of the fake teachers, and let him bake in jail till he squeals on all the guys he sold fake writs too.

I'd wager that those who lie to get jobs are more likely the dishonest, surly, drunken, pleasure seekers who besmirch the by and large responsible majority who work and have a positive time here. Thanks guys! Your greed and ends justify the means reasoning has ensured a few more Koreans will look on me as a false clown out for cash Rolling Eyes Someone give me there address in jail and we can all send them envelopes full of o bek wons to make them feel better. Another case of faulty Korean journalism. Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't the real story that he was worried because he had sex with a couple of Philipino prostitutes? Not that he was infected, just that he was higher-risk?

The whole story got a proper fisking on the Marmot's Hole, mainly in the comments section and it was actually looking like the girlfriend concocted the email for the sake of revenge. At any rate, it was a prime example of racist and sensationalist journalism with what seemed like little basis in fact.

Yeah, even in the states it's a felony.

I asked that question honestly. I know in the US and Canada that it's quite serious; I was wondering if it was here as well.

The plot thickens:

The Marmot wrote:
Oh, and then the story brings up the saga of our Australian friend who allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend with AIDS, although the story this time (according to NoCut News) is he stalked her with emails and phone calls because he was angry that shed found a new boyfriend.

About 10 people get busted for having fake credentials. Is there any other country on earth that this would be considered news?

I like the fact that they find it important to explain one of them worked at a fast food restaurant and the other a factory before coming here

essential details and great investigative journalism

Thailand - it was after that John Karr incident where he was supposedly a child molester killer. where in fact he was just a disturbed man wanting a sex change.

He was innocent of the crime but it started a massive anti-teacher sentiment at the time where they decided to start verifying teachers qualifications (which wasn't a bad thing to do), the crazy thing was Karr was actually a qualified teacher.

The two lads who got busted spent three months in prison. They knew what they were doing and broke the law by using fake credentials.
