I've definitely seen that before. If you Google "yuo cna raed tihs, yuo hvae a sgtrane mnid," a bunch of links come up.
How old is the student? |

Draw a smiley face on it, tell her you've seen it several times before and now she should do her homework herself and turn it in. |

While this is fascinating and it really is true, your student most likely plagiarized that off of the Internet. This is the demonstration of a genius, most likely a researcher.
Who ever sent the student to school with this as written homework sure were trying to win the image contest. I too have someone who is good at English doing my students homework and diary writings. I am thinking it is a combination of parents and private foreign teachers in the evening as many of my students have English speaking parents and private teachers who don't teach at the school they attend.
I really can easily read all that misspelled gibberish and understand it just as well as it if it were correct. That is quite amazing. |

I doubt only 55% can read that. I'd say more like 95% or more. |

What on earth was the homework assignment you gave them?
Write on it:
"Do yuor hmwerook aigan bueacse you cpeoid tihs form the ienetrnt."
Just as a test to see if she has any clue what she handed in soever. Hmmm. Or I guess you could just ask her to read it out loud.
And by the way I thought every native speaker could read that, not just 55%? |

I've shown it to several Korean coworkers in the past and all could read it with no problem.
As far as native speakers being unable to read it, just extrapolate from this image:
