|
|
Hello everyone. I'm a newbie in the ESL world in search of guidance.
I recently received an offer from CDI Holdings. The position is at a branch in Seoul and the pay rate is more than comfortable. The income potential is significant and I'm very interested in taking the position.
What I need at this point is an accurate estimate of my start up costs- prefereably from someone who has worked for CDI on an hourly basis. Here is a bit of background.
1. CDI reimburses for flights. My flight will cost ~$950
2. CDI has an unpaid training period.
3. Accomodations are not included in CDI's hourly compensation packages.
4. I'd need to buy some "professional" attire after arriving in Seoul.
5. I would be paid in the first half of the month following my arrival.
So, basically, it seems I would need money for: a plane ticket, ~ 5 weeks living expenses in Seoul, and job appropriate clothing. Can anyone provide a solid estimate? Am I missing anything important?
Thanks in advance.
Best,
Ensor

Work attire is casual, jeans are OK so no need for a lot of new clothes. Pay day will likely be 6 weeks after start date. Your apartment will probably cost 500 to 700 per month. |

Thanks. Given the classes I'll be teaching, I'll need to wear business/business casual attire. I can't really cut the clothing costs.
Can anyone provide a broken down startup cost estimate in Seoul extending from arrival to first pay day (10th of the following month)?

I'm not gonna give a broken down cost estimate, but I would expect to spend about $1000-1500 your first month if you're planning to buy a bed, desk, chairs, plates, etc. for you house, plus food and clothes. You may consider buying clothes at home though, especially if you're tall or have long arms |

Thanks. My contract includes a key money loan so that's covered (in a sense).
What I really need to know is:
1: When EXACTLY does CDI remburse for flights?
2: Living as modestly as possible, what will my total out of pocket costs in Seoul be from the end of CDI training to receipt of first pay check (~40 days)?
Best,

I am not sure this is wise. Are you the size of a Korean? Clothes shopping is often very difficult. Having stuff made takes time. I would strongly suggest buying clothes for the first month at least before you leave.
I have squeaked by on $500 American for 5 weeks in Korea before, in my first month, but I had a furnished apartment. |

I'm about the size of an average Korean so I shouldn't have trouble finding things.

Understood. Here's my problem. I've been offered a generous houry rate but my contract doesn't include housing. And since I'll have to arrive in Seoul ~40 days before getting paid, it seems like I'll have to cover 2 months rent plus living expenses in Seoul before I receive a dime. That's an issue.
I'm not sure how it works in detail though. On what day of the month do CDI hourly employees in Seoul pay rent? Do you end up having to pay 2 months rent before getting your first pay check? And what will my transportation expenses be? It is my understanding that the hourly employees at CDI branches often work at multiple locations. How much might I expect to pay for transport?
I'd really appreciate it if a CDI Seoul Branch hourly employee would fill me in on the financial administrivia of those first 6 weeks. |

Did you get a teacher's email from the school during the interview process?
Transport - it's between 800-1600 won per trip on the subway. If you buy a card for the subway/bus system, they won't charge you for transfering between the two. The card costs maybe 2000 won or so. So, you could maybe guess at $1 per trip. If you can find out from your school how many locations you teach at, you could calculate a budget for this. |
