It's rumored that EPIK hires every foreigner that meets their qualification requirements. In fact, they wish they could get more foreigners.

Is this also the case with Seoul (SMOE)? I've noticed that the SMOE gives the impression to foreigners that their jobs are the most coveted among teaching jobs for foreigners in Korea. I wonder how true that is or whether they're scrambling to hire foreigners like EPIK.

SMOE turns away applicants, especially those with only a BA and nothing else (some do get hired). SMOE's quota is growing every year. They do have people quit mid contract, like those in bad schools, and have to hire more people to fill those gaps.

I've always wondered about this as well. I have heard more complaints about SMOE than even EPIK. I've heard more complaints about EPIK than GEPIK. Yet, GEPIK is supposedly the worst out of all of them from what I have read. SMOE is considered the best for two reasons, schools are located near or in Seoul and they pay the most. The thing is, there are many teachers who don't mind living in a rural area and are better paid and have better benefits working with GEPIK schools. Notice I say GEPIK schools and not GEPIK. The experienced teachers know the best jobs are contracts with the school and not the government programs.

From what I have been told recently, SMOE does turn away a number of applicants who are screened out for various reasons. They have many positions that they try to fill, but some applicants fail to meet the requirements for employment. SMOE, like others are attempting to replace the need for using recruiters who have burned their share of people over the last several years.

There are a number of positons which still remain open for September hirings, so if you are being told they have closed hiring, that is not the case. You can make a contact to their office through their website at

BTW, I do not work for SMOE, but they were kind enough to share this informatrion with me, so I am passing it along...
