"The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a lower court�s ruling that a 61-year-old man must pay 300,000 won ($326) to a 63-year-old man he defamed in Internet postings.

The court ruled that the 61-year-old, named only as Seo, insulted the 63-year-old, identified only as Choi, by attacking his personality.

It began in November 2005, when Choi criticized a conservative group on the Internet. Although Choi used his nickname, �Algeoji,� he revealed his real name and age.

In reply to the posting, Seo wrote, �I want to give you a lesson, little boy. If you figure out the problems with your writing and understand the false logic, you will not be treated as a little boy.�

Choi wrote back to defend himself.

Seo followed up by writing, �I cannot stand your ugly behavior anymore. Wake up, you stupid boy.�

After Choi threatened to file a legal suit against him, Seo wrote, �You are like a beggar, trying to earn money by making me insult you. Please go away. Even your smell is disgusting.�

The court said the public comments could not be permitted.

�The suspect used insulting expressions on the Internet and damaged the victim�s reputation by disgracing his personality,� the ruling read. �A contempt charge is affirmed when a suspect publicly makes a judgment against a victim which disgraces the victim�s public reputation.�
