I will be working in Siheung City at a Public School from September and I get "4 weeks paid holiday."

What time of year do the holidays come usually?

Also there are 17 days "National Holiday". Are these usually individual days or week long perods as in China?

You should get a 2 week block in the summer and another 2 week block in the winter vacations. The specific dates will depend on whether or not your school is planning on running a "day camp" during the school break.

The national holidays fall when they fall on the calendar. They are individual days and USUALLY they do not move them to make long weekends. If they fall on a weekend you won't even notice them or get a day off in lieu.

Principals at public schools have discretionary power to add additional days off (like teachers day) as well.

It completely depends on your school. I know some people who are only getting 3 weeks, and others who are getting 12.

I have two weeks in my contract but I ended up getting seven. I could have had more had I not agreed to teach camp. Winter vacation will start sometime around the beginning of January and end around the first of March. Summer vacation starts sometime at the beginning of July and ends around the middle to end of August. The dates depend on the school. Whether or not you have to show up also depends on the school. Some schools will have teachers come in and sit the whole day even without classes. It's definitely something you should question.

Hi
I have a question regarding this vacation .Our school closes 23 July but I was informed by the co teacher that I have to be at school and teach the same kids for 22 hours per week until the school starts.I told her it is up to the principal if I come in or not as from what I read here and she seemed to be quite in the dark about it.

I dont think that they have much experience in having a foreign teacher at the school and as I am relatively new here as in only a few weeks i dont either.

So how does it work?

I cannot approach the principal myself as he doesnt speak a word of english and I need to explain to her in order for her to approach the principal.

It just seem to be a bit of a punishment for those learners to have to come into school for twenty hours per week for the whole vacation.

I m not sure how the whole story work so please giveme some guidance regarding this.

Our school does not have a camp ...

Thank you for your assistance and pm me if there is anythng that appears to be unclear..

Assuming this is a public school I would be suprised if they are running lessons as normal for the whole vacation ... But the official line on what you need to do in the vacation will come down to your contract ... How many days holiday are you entitled to? ... That is what you should definitely get ... Otherwise the official position would be that you need to attend school as normal on the other days in the vaction ... Regardless of whether or not there are actual classes for you to teach ...

When we say that anything beyond this is up to the principal ... we mean that sometimes our principals do make other decisions about what they require us to do ... but because it is not in line with what the contract says this may not widely publicise the decision that they have made ... So that they themselves don't get into trouble with the heirachy above them ... for not following the contract .... So saying "it is "up to the principal" why won't he do it?" May be as simple as he has been told he can't do it ...

In this situation I would simply tell your co-teacher that you want to talk to your principal about the summer vacation ... and would like them to attend so that they can interpret for you ... Then ask your principal directly what he wants you to do in the summer vacation ... so that you can plan when you will take the days off you are entitled to ... That would tell you accurately enough what you are dealing with ... It could be anything from "come in as normal" "work four hours" or "work from home" (and document what you do) ... You may get extra days off to do "cultural things" in Korea ... or just get the days your contract gives you .. But going into the meeting with "I want what other people's principals give to them ... " approach is I think unlikely to succeed ...

The national holidays with a brief description can be found at this link:

http://forum.koredinco.com/viewtopic.php?t=19 (2007 calendar)

Quite interesting since many people know nothing of their particular meaning...

Also, holidays in Korea change on the calendar from year to year on the calendar, so they fall differently on week days and weekends. This is good when they are mostly during the week, but sucks when they are on the weekend, because it is actually a lost day of vacation time...
