I'm brand new to Seoul- got here last week and I have two unrelated questions: firstly I'm being eaten alive by the mosquitos yet I don't like "off" -any other suggestions on how to avoid the massive red welts? I now have one of my cheek and it isn't so pleasant!
Secondly, I don't know anyone here other then the other 3 teachers at my school. Although they are really nice I was hoping to make friends outside of work-- any ideas? I'm a single female so heading to the bar alone isn't really my thing. Any other ideas? Will other foreigners be receptive to me approaching them on the street? |

In a word(s), probably no. Don't take it personally. Use the seach function and you will find numerous threads on this topic. |

Would you walk up to a stranger in your home country and start talking to them? Asking where they are from and what they are doing here?
Probably not. So why would you do it here?
As for mosquitos start smoking that always gets rid of them. |

In Seoul, walking up to a random foreigner might be a no-no. In my city, it would be perfectly fine -- in fact, it would be expected (I live in a small city with a very small foreigner population).
There might be message boards for your district, or you might ask your co-workers (if they've been here longer than you) where the foreigners hang out. In Seoul you should have no problems. |

OP, see what I mean? These are the types of friendly faces you can expect to run into around your 동. Sunshine, lollipops and high fives every day of the week! |

The fact is you don't walk up to everybody you see in your home country and try and start talking to them do you? You might if you have just recently been released as part of the care in the community project.
If I'm out and about I don't particularly want somebody coming up and pestering me with inane questions.
If I was in a bar maybe it would be ok (probably not though) but not walking down the street. |

| I've met lots of people in the street. If somebody shuns me for taking up a few seconds of their precious walking about time, well, it's a quick litmus test that shows how much of a pompous goof that somebody probably is, and spares me ever speaking to them again. |

For the mosquitos....well there are two preventions u can use to stop them biting and one cure if you are already bitten.
Find ur local mart, supermarket or pharmacy..
You can get a spray for now that would be easier than getting a mosquito net. The spray is called F-Killer... Spray it around ur room...Make sure ur windows and doors are closed as much as possible..
The mozzies will becoming more and more frequent as the real Summer kicks in!!
Get to a pharmacy..They are plenty of them about no matter where u live.. They have something there which can be applied to ur bitten areas and also works to keep the mosquitos away too.. I can picture the tube they give but I dont know the actual name.. Just point to ur bitten areas or say "mu ggies" and they will no doubt understand. They also sell the F killer spray in Pharmacies so..u could kill two birds in there...J
ust say F-Killer iseyo...
Anyway people in pharmacies can usually understand English if the body actions dont work..
As for meeting foreigners..well it will prob take some time. How about going with ur cow workers to Itaewon or even Hongdae..where many foreigners congregate. They are probably the easiest place to meet other foreigners..
No need to rush about meeting new people just yet!
Get to the Pharmacy and get the spray and treatment to deal with the mosquitos!!! |
