Not to brag, but I seem to recall predicting that the GNP would eventually do something like this. I'm a bit surprised that they did it before the presidential election, though. I thought they'd want to go into the election with a hardline policy on the books.

Quote:
The leadership of the conservative Grand National Party unanimously approved a new North Korea policy on Wednesday. The main opposition party will give up the principle of reciprocity in relations with the North and separate North Koreas abandonment of its nuclear program from progress in inter-Korean relations. The new policy details dozens of measures to boost inter-Korean exchanges; they include fully permitting North Korean newspapers and broadcasts in South Korea, and supporting North Koreas participation of international financial organizations like the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Asia Development Bank.

Like I say, I sort of saw something like this coming. Yes, granted, the Sunshine policy didn't turn out to be the instant fast-track to reunification that its proponents had made it out to be. But it isn't as if the hardline policies of the dictators had done anything to prevent North Korea from devolving into the nightmare republic we now see before us.

The article on it in the Korea Times quoted some opposition party member calling it the GNP's "two month insurance policy" which they would likely drop after the elections...

From what I recall, the article also indicated that the policy shift was formulated by one the top hardliners in the party...
