I'm at work now. My co-worker and I just dropped down a restaurant to have some Gim Bob between class. We've been having this on and off discussion about the utility of cleaning restaurant glasses with UV light, which is what many restaurants seem to do.

I think it would be fine if they actually handwashed these dishes--but apparently they don't. Just UV light. Thus, I have been in the habit of buying Coca Cola everytime I go to a restaurant (either from the restaurant itself or from a convenience store before hand) just so I can avoid the water.

Does anyone know why they do this? Does it work at all? I know you can kill some germs with UV, but viruses? Don't those have to be physical removed.. ie: by soap/washing?

Yeah, they should physically remove the heavy soil, but the UV will kill off anything as effectively as any other method commonly used.

It is used commercially more than you may be aware (it is likely how your Coke bottle was cleaned), it is just more in plan sight here in Korea.

Would you drink from them?

Is it possible that you're just going to a particularly dirty kimbap joint?

All the ones near me wash the cups before putting them in the UV sterilizer. If they didn't, you'd see a whole lot of cups completely smeared with lipstick. And yes, when I do go to those restaurants (almost never), I drink from them.

yeah, from what I have seen of what goes on in Asian the kitchens. I am as comfortable with the glass of water as I am with anything that is served. I think Koreans have clean habits, but their proceedures are what I question (the use of UV being the least of it).

Koreans have clean habits? FYI... A strange habit among koreans, they spit in the plates they eat. I had even seen ajoussis spiting in the beer glasses.
Back during my university days, i had a korean room mate who use to get berated for his spiting habit in the coke bottles. waaack....
