I'm planning a trip to Jeju island in a couple of weeks. I was told to rent a car when I'm there so I can see everything. Is a license necessary? How do i get one. Can anybody tell me a bout their experience getting around Jeju-do. What's to do there besides hiking? Any temples? I assume there are a couple of beaches.....

Double check this info with the cop shop. Yes, you need a license. If you are visiting Korea, you can use your home country license provided it's still current and it's one of those recognized for use by tourists here. For your first year as a resident here (supposedly), you can use an IDL provided that it was issued outside of Korean and the substantiating license (the one you showed to get the IDL) is current. After one year's residence here, you need to have a Korean Driver License.

If your Canadian just pop over to the local DMV and switch your drivers license to a Korean one. It is actually cheaper than getting an international drivers license, when i went it only cost 5,000won. No test, short physical and pick it up the next day. It's good for 8 years and can be traded back into a Canadian drivers license when you get home.

Here is a link with all the details.

Turns out I was wrong its 10,000 won.

Don't know about temples in Jeju, but there is just about everything else.

We went there on honeymoon (as many couples do!), and it seems the whole island is geared towards tourists.

Submarine & balloon trips, many museums and attractions with of course the famous Halla mountain.

We used a hire car, which came with a brochure of each attraction on the island. We found one we liked in the brochure, entered the number into the GPS and just drove.

Would go again, no problem.

I read on another thread it's 90 days. If you are a resident, you are supposed to have one.

This is useful info..

Does the standard Korean driving license include 125cc motorbikes?

Also, will they keep my UK license?

I'm with Bibbitybop on this. After about twenty minutes of searching - which is all the attention I can afford to pay on a Friday night - I couldn't find the thread. I'm pretty sure an IDL is only good for tourists, so if you haven't got a Korean dl the best bet is to hide your arc and plead ignorance with your home dl in hand.
