|
|
I'm a U.S. citizen who is thinking of a change of scenery next year, and I'm considering living in Australia and/or New Zealand for a year or so. I'd need to work there, most likely doing odd jobs, to support my travels. So, I'm looking for anyone who has successfully backpacked and worked through Australia.
I know many of you might find this to be a crazy idea----going from a country where life is relatively easy and the ratio of savings to living expenses is high to one where life is potentially rife with hardships and complications-----but, please, I don't wish to discuss any of that. While I certainly want to be informed of the realities of such a venture, I want to focus on the positive and what can be done to achieve my potential goal.
Please feel free to send me a private message. Any ideas, suggestions, Web sites, and/or contact names would be much appreciated. Thanks for your assistance. |

A good friend of mine just finished six months in Australia and stopped by Korea on his way back home to visit me. He got a car while he was there and drove up through the center of the country to Darwin or some place and earned money picking fruit. It seems like a decent thing to do. |

Just go to a hostel in Sydney and hang out in the lounge a few nights and start talking to people. A lot of people do it and it's apparently pretty easy to do. |

I haven't thought about the specifics much, but right now I figure I would visit the most popular areas for tourists: the east coast, for starters-----Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland----but I want to go all over. I imagine the time of year I would go (perhaps December or January?) and the availability of work would influence where I would go, but at this point, I'm open. Got any suggestions? In terms of finding work, especially for someone such as I who, by the looks of things, probably wouldn't be able to secure a work visa-----where might I start? Cheers. |

Must say there were not many Americans there. They don't get visas, generally speaking. it was mostly British, Israelis and Dutch folks there. |

if you are American you can go through BUNAC and get a 1 year work visa for New Zeland (you can do any job you want). |
