How long does it take you to assess someone you just met in terms of their intelligence?

Intelligence defined not by well read, or a doctorate degree, etc., but rather real intelligencethe degree of the perceptive component we each intrinsically posses that enables us to detect truth in all aspects of existence. And subsequently the efficiency level of processing the data in the large universal way of automatic critical thinking followed by immediately knowing the best way to proceed with an action, no action or simply taking a mental photograph of the minute and filing it in the mental rolodex for future reference.

Personally, usually within less than a minute I know Im smarter than the person I just met.

If it takes longer, well, that person is really smart.

Well...when considering the question as it relates to this board, I'd say about 10 seconds.. as I look at most of the posts here...

I'd say the opposite of what the OP says. If a person is genuinely intelligent it's easy to notice right away. If they aren't and are faking it, it might take a little while longer to spot the fraud. You come up with a lot of obstacles, such as arrogance, loudness, charm, power, etc which can make the unintelligent seem like they know what they're talking about.

One of the things I've gotten from being a teacher is a wider definition of intelligence. Interacting with so many people on a day to day basis will do that. People can and will surprise you. And lets not overlook the whole "liking" vs "assessing intelligence" thing.

That said, 1 - 2 minutes. Less if they're chatty. Even less if they're chatty and dumb.

Even though you have tried to define intelligence here, it is still far too complex and nebulous a concept to be assessed without first rigorously defining it. Thinking you`re smarter than someone else is usually just plain arrogance with a toss of ignorance thrown in for good measure.

Run-on sentences are the first clue.

Some call it overly chatty.

I always ignore mispelling.

It could take a long time if the person suffers from mental illness.

The Vulcan mind-meld that I usually use in such iffy situations clears that up in a jiffy: the size of the cranium, the good firm grip I can get on the convoluted bumps and dents on the fella's gray matter, and the whiff of book binding glue from the proboscis had it been probing and assessing, usually does it for me.

The homo sapien exudes intelligence. The chatty is mere foreplay. Laughing

Those who show their intelligence quickest tend to be the critical and cynical, those lacking vision, understanding and wisdom.

The smartest people I know don't appear to be so on first impressions.

But the dumbest give themselves away in a nanosecond.

I agree and I wasn't being altogether serious as I hoped would come through in my last statement.

Everyone is a genius in their own way, for this there can be no doubt.

And one may know someone for years before appreciating that person's unique special genius.

But let there be no two ways about it--there's a village in Texas that's been without their idiot for some years now (no, it's not my home town, for that idiot is still there) and the sooner this particular idiot assumes his rightful position, the better off the world will be.

Re: the Stanford-Binet 5, otherwise known as the IQ test.

"Low variation on individuals tested multiple times indicates the test has high reliability. It features Fluid Reasoning, Knowledge, Quantitative Reasoning, Visual-Spatial Processing, and Working Memory as the five factors tested...the test makers assure people the Stanford-Binet 5 will accurately assess low-end functioning, normal intelligence, and the highest levels of giftedness (Riverside Publishing, 2004). Despite this recent revision, some controversy remains as to the accuracy and bias of this test; however, many psychologists believe the evidence available shows that the Stanford-Binet test is valid, and it remains a popular assessment of intelligence."

Re: the OP...it takes between three and four hours to run the test, if I remember correctly. While it is widely misused, and not useful as a measurement of intellect so much as it is a useful measure of particular strengths and weaknesses, it is pretty fun.
