http://www.lse.co.uk/ShowStory.asp?story=AY2638954S&news_headline=three_quarters_believe_global_warming_a_natural_occurrence

Quote:
ALMOST three quarters of people believe global warming is a 'natural occurrence' and not a result of carbon emissions, a survey claimed today.

This goes against the views of the vast majority of scientists who believe the rise in the earth's temperatures is due to pollution.

The online study which polled nearly 4000 votes found that a staggering 71 percent of people think that the rise in air temperature happens naturally.

And 65 percent think that scientists' catastrophic predictions if pollution isn't curbed are 'far fetched'.

Emma Hardcastle, publisher at Pocket Issue which carried out the research, said: "If 71% of people feel that Man has nothing to do with the recent change in our climate then those same people are not going to buy into any movement to reduce their carbon footprint.

"We need to make it clear that there is nothing natural about the significant rise in both carbon emissions and global temperatures since the industrial revolution.

"Pocket Issues brief is to help people to understand the facts, encouraging them to click through to a carbon counter as a result.

"Pocket Issue feel that the poll highlights the need for government and influential bodies to concentrate on getting the public to understand the facts about global warming and why rather than how they should reduce their carbon footprint."

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which represents most scientists, stated earlier that the increase in global temperatures is 'very likely due to the observed increase of man-made greenhouse gas concentrations'.

They define very likely as 'more than 90 percent certain'.

I find this a little surprising as it goes against a couple polls in other countries. Putting the science aside completely, this survey indicates that, in the UK at least, many do not buy into the theory. As the article articulates, it will be difficult to sell people on reducing their carbon footprint when they do not believe in man-made global warming. What do you think?

I find articles that rely on "the vast majority of..." to justify their position fall flat. Remember, up until the 1960s the "vast majority of doctors" beieved that babies did not feel pain. Just because many people believe something does not make it true.

Also bear in mind the interesting fact that Earth is not the only planet experiencing global temperature change. Mars, Titan (moon) and other bodies in our solar system are echoing changes freakishly similar to Earth's.

Does anyone know the present temperature on Mars?

I'm curious.

It's hot, very hot. I heard that the Martians abused their planet's resources and they all became toast.

Hey cbclark! I don't think that's funny at all! When I was a child a gigantic fuzzy anthropomorphic acronym burst into my nursery and buggered my teddy bear.

I am also curious as to the breakdown of the remaining 25%.

I am also very upset that jkelly80 is a self admitted acroniphobe.

Wait what? Is this just a "click the box study"?
What sorta creedence is there to this study? Who participated? Is it completely random? Do people sign in? What steps were taken to give this study some measure of reliability?

I think I'd be inclined to agree with this though.

Very kind of you to avoid using acronyms.

If you saw a heat wave, would you wave back?

Global warming IS occuring...but it's mainly because of solar activity. If it were due or largely due to greenhouse gases, the other planets wouldn't be experiencing it now, would they?

It HAS been hotter in the past. And there weren't any factories or cars polluting the atmosphere. It goes in cycles. In 10-20 years people will be crying "Wolf" again when global cooling happens. And when the next stage of global warming comes again, there will be people willing to cry "Wolf" and jump on the bandwagon a la Gore. Or scientists who want research grants.

As long as they can make money from it, these cycles will continue.

I seem to recall a National Geographic or Popular Mechanics article back in the sixties early seventies time frame that spoke of global cooling and the coming ice age, of course no one had the chutzpah to blame the fire makers or the masons.

When I was a middle school student we were taught that a Global Ice Age was coming. Your local weatherperson has a hard enough time predicting rain for tomorrow. Just how easy do you believe predicting weather for the entire planet would be. Then spread that prediction out over 5, 10, 15, 25, 100 years.

Scare tactics and fear mongering work. We have thousands (perhaps hundreds of thousands) of "scientists" and others whos income is driven by "Global Warming". Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what that means.
