The Situation:

My girlfriend is a Hunan TV host. She wants her superiors to choose her for a program on Hunans national broadcast channel after Chinese New Years, so she wants to become even hotter (my words). A lot of her friends have gone to Shanghai (where we are now living) and Guanzhou for cosmetic surgery, and while they are acceptable, most Chinese say Korea is the best place to go. I dont know if its urban myth or not, but girls here say 7 in 10 Korean girls have had some sort of procedure. There are tour operators here who organize cosmetic surgery trips to Korea, but my gut feeling is these are too risky. Surgery is not something I want an individual worrying about his bottom line to organize.

Asking for Help:

Being an English teacher in Shanghai, I feel Ive developed a certain amount of expertise on the city. Being both immigrant and tourist I know a good deal when I see one, but place more value on the admission ticket rather than the money it cost (understand?). I hope you Korean teachers can use your respective knowledge to help out my girlfriend. Im looking for concrete information related to cosmetic surgery in Korea rather than ethical arguments. While you are welcome to post whatever you want, my girlfriends decision was not made overnight, and now she is steadfast in her choice.

Information Regarding Cosmetic Surgery

Does anyone know anyone whos had cosmetic surgery done in Korea? Weve been looking at Dr. Hongs clinic in Seoul (http://hongjinjoo.com/english/hospitalguid/hospital.asp - I cant read Korean, so have only gathered limited information from the site). I know hes lectured internationally, and graduated from what Ive heard is the best medical school in Korea. Does anyone know anything about this clinic? Does anyone have any specific recommendations? Is anyone familiar with general prices of cosmetic surgery in Korea? My girlfriend wants to go by the doctors recommendations, but is sure she wants facial bone resurfacing for a rounder look.

Information Regarding Living in Seoul for a Few Weeks

Can anyone recommend a good deal on a hotel room for my girlfriend for a few weeks in October/November? My girlfriend wants to budget most of her money for the surgery and not for her accommodations. Or, and this is asking a lot, can anyone host her? I figure this is good because then she can have someone help her out with Korean when shes there. She doesnt speak a word, and I dont know how shell communicate with the surgeon (but her English is pretty good). Wed be more than happy to exchange the favor if youre ever in Shanghai. Please email me at [email protected] or reply to this thread if you can help. Thanks! Allen.

By any chance, was your girlfriend filming a week or so ago in Itaewon? I saw a Chinese TV crew in a shop that sells motorcycle leathers.

i know 2 korean girls who've had surgery here- breast implants, eyes and noses. I also know an American ESl teacher here who got a job done to eliminate the bags from under the eyes.
All with no bad side effects or complaints.
As I understand it, the surgeons here do a professional job, have trained in the west, and speak good English.

In the Apgujeong/Sinsa-dong area there must be two plastic surgeons on every block! Lots of Korean motels. The Sinsa Hotel costs 50,000W a night. Just down the street is the Young Dong hotel, probably costs a bit more. Hope this helps. One of my old students is a well-educated plastic surgeon who speaks good English, nice guy too, if you want his details you can PM me.

Derrek - My girlfriend has never been to Korea. I sometimes see "look at crazy Korea"-style travelogues on TV here. Probably one of those.

rapier - It's good to hear success stories. Have you seen the before/after pics of some Korean stars? My girlfriend showed me some and I was amazed.

canuckistan - That's solid help you're sending my way. Thanks a lot. I'll definitely pm you. Thanks again. BTW, 50K won looks like 42 USD. Is the place pretty clean?

little mixed girl - Who's the girl in the pic? Do you think a lot of Korean female stars resemble each other? My gf thinks so; she says it's because they all get cosmetic surgery. If all Korean girls went for the double eyelid, large-eyed, pouty-lipped, high-nosed, etc. facial features, wouldn't they look a lot alike. Anyway, they look hot to me. It looks like the clinic is in Apkujung-dong. Thanks.

Thanks for the help all!

A friend of mine had her ******* enlarged at the Seoul University Medical Center in Hyehwa. Supposedly it's one of the best hospitals for cosmetic surgery.
