I really enjoy multi-day walking trips, and I'm wondering if I will be able to do this type of trip in Korea on my time off. Basically what I am hoping is to walk between smaller towns/cities, doing between 20 and 30 km a day and avoiding major highways.

Has anyone done something like this in Korea? It seems like there are a lot of opportunities for hiking, but I am more interested in something a bit less intense that I could keep up for over a week.

What would be a good area of the country to do something like this?

Thanks!

My suggestion would be to walk in the Jeolla provinces, as they are the least intense physically with their flat landscape, and they have alot of smaller countryside roads which are safe to walk along.
There is never any problem finding accomodation in Korea, as even the smallest cities have yeogwans (inn's) or love motels. It really does help if you speak basic Korean though. And if you dont, maybe the trip is a good excuse to start learning!

I don't know if you got your inspiration from this book, but if you haven't read it, check out Simon Winchester's "Korea, A Walk Through the Land of Miracles". It's going on 20 years old now, but it's still a great read about how the author walks from Jeju island to the DMZ, going from small village to small village.

I rented a bike and rode around Jeju. You could easily do the same thing walking. It's about 200 I think so could take you 7 days or so.

In the summer of '02 we rode our bicycles from Mokpo to Busan along the coast. We took a week to do it and it was so worth it.

You could probably walk it in segments starting at Mokpo on a Saturday, moving as far as you want over the weekend, return home and continue the next weekend from where you left off.
