I've been looking for books about Gyeongju before making (another) trip there this summer. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
One book I've been looking for is "Korea's Golden Age" by Edward Adams. Apparently it has gone out of print. If you know where to buy this book, or own it yourself, would you please let me know? Thanks. (Bluelake?)
"Smiles of the Baby Buddha" by Yu Hong-june has served me well on previous trips to Gyeongju. The author wrote a series of books called 나의 문화유산 답사기 (My Exploration of Cultural Heritage) and has had the Gyeongju chapters translated into English. It's a very revealing book and there are some wonderful little spots recommended in it that I never would have otherwise found.
Gyeongju isn't for everyone, but I fucking love it there. |

My son finished translating a book on the city a year ago; it's supposed to be published soon--I forget the exact title, but it's something like A Guidebook to Gyeongju or A Field Guidebook to Gyeongju. The problem I had with the book is that it was more like A Buddhist's Guidebook to Gyeongju, as the author spent an inordinate amount of time describing temples, statues, and pagodas.
I have the book by Adams--it's pretty good. You can get it from AbeBooks:
