I will be moving from a public school to a university in August. My public school contract finishes - as far as I know - on August 25th and the university contract will start on August 26th. They say I still need a release letter because they need to apply for the visa while I am still under contract - is this true? I'm not sure that my public school would allow that.

I can't understand why there would be any problem in getting a release letter in this situation. If you final day with the school is as you say ... Then all you are really asking the school to say in a letter is that your last day will be XXXXX. That will then allow the process on the other visa to start ...

But in saying that I then have another question ... Will you need to do a visa run to get the new visa in your passport ? and if so how does all that work ... No time at all between them is to me tricky ... Will you have leave between the two jobs ... even if your "official" contract end date is the 25th ... so you can do a visa run if necessary ...

I assume that they need the release letter because you are going to need to do the visa run before you have actually finished the contract. Have immigration said what the date of release needs to be on the letter.
My gut level response of what would be reasonable would be that the release letter said that your contract was finishing 25th August ... and the contract has a start date of the 26th August ... and all that you need to do is to do a visa run .. with the new number .. before the 26th ... If that is what is the correct position now ... then I can see no problem at all in asking the school to simply put in writing the fact that your final day will be 25th August.

I am also sure that there will be someone on this board who has been in a similar situation before and who can talk from their experience.
