|

I know that schools will only buy you a ticket to your home country so trips to Thailand etc are out of the question. Is there anything in the rules which prevents you from cashing the ticket in though? Has anyone done this? Do some schools ask for evidence that you have been home? (such as a boarding pass) |

As a general rule the tickets purchased for the homebound flight are non-transferable, i.e. they cannot be exchanged for a separate destination, or cashed in for the money...The schools work with agents that are well versed in making sure a ticket to a destination is good only for that destination... |

They will give you money instead if you are not going home. |

I forgot to mention that...This is true, they will give you 75% of the round trip ticket if you are going to renew with them, however, I have never heard of a school offering the money option for people who were not going to renew their contract with their school...I believe it would cause a lot of trouble for the school and they don't want that trouble...So, if you are going to renew with your school just tell them you want the money option instead of the round trip home...They usually transfer the money right away at the completion of you contract when they have this information |

A) Tell them you are leaving, buy your own ticket, submit a copy of the receipt. When you get your reinbursement, refund your ticket and go where you want.
B) ALL of the newer GEPIK contracts (2006/2007, 2007/2008) will allow you to choose a destination other than your home PROVIDED the cost does NOT exceed the cost of the ticket home.
If you signed an OLDER copy of the contract for your current year OR plan to stay in KOREA. follow advice "A". |

Here's my situation. I am actually in the middle of my contract so I will have to return to the school once the holiday period is over. They have already told me that I would have to buy the ticket myself and I that the school would reimburse me opon submitting a receipt. I am just worried that the school would then ask me to show a boarding pass or my passport once I go back. |

Am I fukked? My contract states that "If Employee completes the Term of Employment without the intention to renew and leaves Korea within 10 days from the expiration date, Employer shall pay for Employee's one way return flight."
I will move to another school, but I have no intention of leaving Korea at this point in time. I was fully expecting the flight money in cash. I would never have signed a contract whereby that wasn't an option. But it appears I might have done that. Is there any way to get the money without doing the 'buy a ticket then cash it in later' trick"?
Also, has anyone successfully done that trick?
And.
Has anyone had the same wording in their contract (as in mine) AND yet received the flight money home?
Thanks,
Jameson |

You are supposed to be reimbursed BEFORE you leave (last day of your contract).
You get the stamp in your passport when you LEAVE the country. How can you show it?

I'm sure I don't understand this...your school should provide you w/ a ticket to come here at the commencement of your contract and one home at the completion of your contract...what are you talking about...that they should provide you a ticket for your mid-term vacation? |

spliff, I'm with you on this one...I have never heard of a school providing a ticket home during the middle of a contract. It normally takes place in the beginning and at the end of a contract...That is like giving someone an open invitation to run away...
Regarding the boarding pass, yes if you want reimbursement they will want the boarding pass to verify you actually took the flight home...They are not going to give you money on the assumption that you actually traveled to the destination you told them you were going to...
Regarding the 10 days before the end of the contract thing, your school should abide by the contract that was written...I had a friend who had a signed document similar to what you described and he actually got ripped out of his flight because the contract was worded in such a way that the school was able to take advantage of him that way...It isn't a fun situation, but is it one that happens all too frequently here in Korea... |

No I'm leaving 5 months before my contract is up. They are allowing me to do this because I didn't go home last year. (my previous contract). |

He's coming BACK to the school...he's taking a holiday in the middle of his contract.
I seriously doubt they are going to do that. Anyway they can't tell you where to go on holiday. Just tell them you changed your mind. And a ticket to Thailand is much cheaper than a ticket home. If they give you any grief just tell them "Look I saved you money. What are you complaining about?" That should shut them up. If it doesn't then ask for the extra money that it would have cost to go home.
You should be fine with just a receipt...does your school have a track record of being that nit-picky?
If I was in your shoes I'd just tell them where I was going to go and tell them "Look you can give me 500 dollars for Thailand or 1500 dollars for my home ticket." Put it like that, and they should see the light. |

Here is an update; I bought a return ticket to the UK for 1.5 million and so far I have been told that as soon as I submit a copy of the ticket and receipt that the school will send me the money immediately. They haven't mentioned anything about showing them boarding passes upon my return. I'm still nervous though. What are your thoughts? Whose actually been in this position? Obviously I will have to come back and tell them how good my visit back to the UK was! |

So show them the copies...then after you get the money refund the ticket and buy one to Thailand. You are entitled to that money or your contract should say so. And you are entitled to change your mind.

Don't mention it either then. Should they ask on your return you simply say "Sorry I didn't keep them." Why would they ask anyway unless they suspected you? But anyway it's none of their business where you go. You are entitled to that money for a return airfare. What you actually DO with that money is up to you.

Why? You make it sound like they are going to tie you to a chair and begin a twelve hour interregation Just say "It was good." and change the subject. I really doubt you have anything to worry about. How are they going to find out? Seriously you will be fine. I hope you enjoy your trip. |
