Hrm. Good news or bad news? The court system delivers final justice ("Look, our court system works! it's not corrupt!") and then Gaddafi steps in and grants final mercy?

Aren't there some Libyan watchers who view the medics as chess pieces in a game between Gaddafi and the Cyrenaica region (where the medics are). The idea being that the Cyrenaica region, long neglected by Gaddafi and with a long rivalry with Tripoli, knows that their case against the medics is blocking Gaddafi's efforts to improve ties to the West, so they should be able to use the case against the doctors to gain concessions from Tripoli.

This is my understanding of the situation. Some time ago Gaddafi's son came out and said these medics are innocent or should be freed (can't remember now exactly) and I doubt he could have done that without his father's tacit approval. But wily old Gaddafi will still find a way to exploit the situation.

I think mindmetoo is bang on. I hope and pray so....

There are a heck of a lot of people in Libya who have bought into the notion so dastardly portraited by a crooked Libyian media that the nurses and doctor did it. This has created terrible pressure and I think Gaddafi is just saving is domestic skin and more importanly his ego and popularity on the street. He then will free them, as a benevolent ruler giving mercy to the wicked. Pox on his house....
