A Korean gangster gets 10 years in Guam, USA, for drug trafficking!
I know the Korean mob is very big and I've heard stories from students about people they know that are Korean gangsters. And Korean gangster movies are so popular that there is a whole movie genre dedicated to them.
I myself don't know too much about Korean gangsters except that they are a very big problem in Korea that needs to be dealt with. From what I've heard, Korean police are not very good at doing their job, or at least compared to American standards. Korea doesn't have anything that comes close to the Ameican FBI that would be good at busting organized crime.
In this Guam case -- see article below -- both federal and local law enforcement agencies were used to bust this drug ring.
Any thoughts or stories about Korean gangsters? How much are they a danger to us?

Korean National Gets 10 Years In Drug Charge
By Eric Palacios
Pacific Daily News

A 30-year-old man, a Korean national, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his participation in a drug ring that sought to bring into Guam 500 grams of the drug crystal methamphetamine, or ice, from Korea.
Duh Wan Kim was sentenced Wednesday in the District Court of Guam. There is no parole in the federal prison system.
Kim also was ordered to five years of supervised release, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorneys Office. But as a condition of his supervised release, Kim will instead will be turned over to immigration officials for deportation proceedings.
Kim was indicted on Aug. 30, 2006 on a charge of attempted possession of methamphetamine hydrochloride with intent to distribute. Kim was found guilty on Nov. 1, 2006.
At street value, 500 grams of ice would be worth an estimated $250,000, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karon Johnson, and investigated by federal and task force agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration; and assisted by officers from the Guam Police Department, Violent Street Crimes Unit, and the Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency, Contraband Enforcement Team, the release stated.

in other words $500 per gram? that's laughably wrong or a glaring typo. |

It's not that far off. A 'point' (one tenth of a gram) sells in NZ for $100NZ.
$1000NZ = $775USD
500 x 775USD = $387500US
(It's probably cheaper in Guam than NZ so I concur that the estimate is accurate) |

from my own experience, a point in vancouver goes for $10-15. You can't pay more than $100 for either a gram of meth or coke unless you're getting primo merchandise or ripped off. $500 for a gram of anything is insane. i know this all varies and is subjective from country to country, but i just think it's funny how they try to scare everyone with "street value" figures that are literally pulled out of thin air. |

If stepped on properly, 500 grams of ice could easily become 1500 grams in a couple of minutes. A lot of times the "street value" will include the cutting/stepping process. |

very true. Like when they do a weed bust and weigh the whole plant, roots, dirt and all. It makes them look better. |

Convicted Man In Ice Case Brings Case to Ninth Circuit
By Gina Tabonares
Marianas Variety News Staff
Thursday, July 12, 2007
A KOREAN national who was convicted for attempting to distribute 500 grams of methamphetamine filed an appeal before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to request for reconsideration of his 10-year imprisonment ordered by the U.S. District Court of Guam.
Duh Wan Kim, 30, was sentenced by Guam District Court Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood last month.
Kim, through his counsel Howard Trapp, wants the Court of Appeals to correct the sentence imposed by the district court.
Kim was indicted on Aug. 30, 2006 for attempted possession of methamphetamine hydrochloride with intent to distribute.
Kim was arrested on Aug. 24, 2006 at the Holiday Resort Hotel after he was tailed by drug enforcement agents who were informed of a drug deal.
Undercover agents busted Kim while in possession of two suitcases containing 500 grams of ice.
After a five-day jury trial on Nov. 1, 2006, Kim was found guilty of the indictment.
Prior to Kims sentencing, Trapp argued that his client should be given a lower sentence based on sentencing guidelines because his participation in the busted drug deal was minimal.
While the court finds there was enough evidence to go to the jury in this instance, the court also finds the government presented a minimal case and that the prosecution was less than vigorous, Trapp stated in his earlier motion to dismiss the indictment against Kim.
Trapp further argued that Kims role was limited to transporting the prohibited drugs, and the government conceded that the main organizers of the drug venture were Man Kwan Lee and Chong Ho Choi.
