One of the greatest movie actors/directors of all time, in my opinion. He manages to combine outright violence, slapstick humour and even romance. What do you think is his greatest movie so far (as a director)? Many people will know him from Battle Royale, although he didn't direct that particular movie.

You may wish to discount my views as I've not seen any of the movies he's directed.

Having watched him since his early days as "comedian" Beat Takeshi, I long ago came to the opinion that he is not funny. Unfortunately, that well-entrenched opinion has dissuaded me from spending time or money to watch any of his movies.

He may well be a genius and I a philistine, but in this particular case, I'm happy to be ignorant. I rate him equally with Tamori.

I vote Zatoichi on account of the dance number at the end. Love that movie!

If you're interested in Takeshi Kitano, Hanabi is the film to see. It's the film he made directly after the motorcycle accident he had in real life that almost killed him.

The film is his statement about life, love and death.

What did you folks think of 'Takeshis?'
I'm not sure whether I liked it, exactly, but some of the imagery was pretty memorable...not his finest work, but eminently watchable nonetheless, I'd say.

Not bad, but since it refers back to his earlier works, it should be the last film anybody sees.

It was okay. A little weird, but good weird.

I agree. Takeshis' is definitely one for those who have seen some of his previous movies. But Zatoichi, Dolls and Kikujiro are class movies that need to be seen.

Also worth watching, though not directed by him, is Blood and Bones (と骨), the story of a Zainichi Korean gangster. It's especially enterntaining for those of us interested in Korea or Koreans abroad. Takeshi spends two hours playing the angriest man imaginable. It's probably his best acting performance It's available here under the Korean title 피와 뼈.
