Raise taxes on Tobacco to fund Child Health care.

I think Child Health Care is a great idea but funding it from tobacco taxes is not.

Here's what I foresee happening:

For now, tobacco taxes are enough to fund universal Child Health Care. Cigarettes are ridiculously expensive and smoking declines. 10 years down the road, there isn't enough people smoking for the taxes to pay for Child Health Care. So then Child Health Care ends up like like Social Security and Medicare, more money is being spent than is going into the system.

I agree with you.

This is an example of the cowardliness of legislatures. IF smoking is a cause of cancer and is dangerous to health and worthy of banning, then legislators should have the courage to defy the agricultural lobby and ban the growing of tobacco. It's a little bit hypocritical of them to fund the war on drugs and at the same time pay subsidies to tobacco growers.

It's time to say: OK, Virginia Tobacco Growers, you have had 40 years or more to find a different cash crop. Tomorrow, the funding stops. If you continue to grow tobacco, we're sending in armed forces with machine guns and flame throwers to burn your crops and slaughter your workers. Get used to it.

OR: They could say: OK, druggies. Weed will be legal starting tomorrow, but we're going to tax the snot out of it like we do tobacco. We're still thinking about cocaine. Don't get your hopes up.

1. Social security and medicare wouldn't be so bad off if Congress hadn't been taken yearly surpluses from them to pay for other expenditures. I wonder if this is going to happen with this tax as well.

2. At least it is better than the prescription drug bill passed a couple years ago. Even from the beginning the gov't didn't have enough resources to pay for it.

good for congress.

I hope congress would have the wisdom to increase the gas tax and put a tax on imported oil to pay for alternative energy.
