Depends on the kids. Some like anything, some like nothing.
It also depends on your co-teachers. If your co-teachers use them a lot, maybe pop songs aren't working for you because they get enough of them already. I can't help you because I fit in this boat and haven't been using them recently. |

I used Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday" from Ddeubel's site. That seemed to go over just fine in all 4 of my classes today, but I made some changes and included some comprehension questions.
I used a Craig David song last week, but the CT told me that the song was too depressing
Just find something relatively slow, with clear pronunciation and a good beat and you'll be fine |

I teach elementary school. I've taught an aferschool class
So Yesterday - Hilary Duff
Uptown Girl - Billy Joel
Lucky - Britney Spears
Hug - Dong Bang Shin Gi (It's not English at its finest but I think it's good for my students to hear Koreans belt out an ORIGINAL song in English)
Yellow Submarine, Octopus's Garden and Ob La Di -The Beatles
Barely Breathing - Duncan Sheik
I've also taught
My Love - Westlife (a BIG hit last year, everyone wanted to learn that song)
Do Wa Diddy Diddy - The Moffats
Hands Up - Ottawan
Tie A Yellow Ribbon (My co-teacher taught the song, don't know the singer)
Living La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin (Requested by students)
Dancing Queen - ABBA
There are more but I can't think of them at the moment. I have karafun files for most of the songs listed, so give me a PM if you want one...

Wow, my middle schoolers would struggle considerably with almost all of them. |

I beat it into them
Actually, I taught most of these songs to my more advanced after school classes. I've taught my regular classes My Love after the advanced kids told the other students about it....
The advanced classes like the songs and are enthusiastic about learning them...Now if only I can get them to sing noraebang style...hmmmm..... |

When I taught elementary, I had a 2nd grade girl who had learned the Beatles "I Will" by heart (and many older elementary girls love that song...)
"Let It Be" and "Yesterday" are also very popular Beatles songs.
"I Believe I Can Fly" by R. Kelly is one that gets lots of requests (from my older students) when I do karaoke from the www.ksolo.com website (that I subsribe to...)
There are also some kids songs (including "Bingo" on that site...)
When I first came to Korea I ordered the "Edutainment" activity book (and tape/CD) which includes songs by original artists including "Bus Stop" by the Hollies, "Daydream Believer" by the Monkees, "Monday, Monday" by the Mamas and Papas, "Yesterday Once More" by the Carpenters, "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals, and many Beatles songs, etc., with song cloze sheets... |

I have a wack of kids karaoke on my website, just hit the button. You need the karafun player to play. All the classics plus seasame street etc... In the book nook, you'll even get some Dr. Seuss. Also there, a powerpoint full of all the major nursery rhymes, just click and play.
I love the version of 5 little monkeys there!
One song that was not mentioned that I found really worked well was ABC by Michael Jackson. I always showed the kids the original video of him and his brothers and they were amazed watching him dance! Then the karaoke, in 4 parts, each part sung by a different group. ABC DoReMi One two three Baby you and me girl..... works great.
Kids in grade 4-6 always loved We will rock you and Don't cha by the *beep* cat girls. This always sent any class over the top. Something about the beat and them hissing Dontcha....

We had a singing contest last week at my elementary PS.
The songs used were:
- The Lion Sleeps Tonight - not sure who the artist is
- We Will Rock You - Queen
- Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
- Upside Down - A-Teens
- Lemon Tree- Fool's Garden
- Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas
- On Top of the World - The Carpenters
Most of these are available on ddeubel's site as karafun files. The best thing about that program is that you can slow down the song which makes it much easier to learn initially, and then you can speed it up. |

Cool song, I'm going to make a karaoke video out of that one - works well, flashing the images/nouns. Like If I had a million dollars, I did on karaoke video....
Binch Lover, glad you let others know how useful changing the tempo/speed is.....really makes a lot of songs manageable. I will also be posting more karaoke and a catalogue of titles soon, many by teachers, once I get through editing them...
