Finally!! The authorities at Merriam-Webster have come around to recognize the ubiquitous cultural presence and the great intrinsic value within the concept of a smackdown. Four definitions, no less.

http://www.m-w.com/info/newwords07.htm

1. "David really put a smcakdown on that Goliath fellow!"

2. "Did you see the smackdown on TV last night?"

3. "Hwang U-suck encountered quite a smackdown after he published his fallacious stem cell research."

4. "Uh-oh: two ajumas, one subway seat. This is a smackdown, for sure!"

I'm glad to see they finally added crunk but disappointed the definition isn't more complete.

How about "throw down" that's more common then "smack down"....Al Swidgen threw down 20 shots of cheap whisky in five minutes.

I am a big wrestling geek and what made smackdown popular (at least to me) was WWE and the Rock. They have a show called Smackdown. The Rock used to use the word "smackdown" quite often. One of my favorite Rock quotes is from 1997

"The Rock is gonna lay the smackdown on your candy ass! The Rock is gonna go down Know Your Role Boulevard, hang that right at Jabroni Drive, and proceed to check your candy ass in at the Smackdown Hotel. Know you role and shut your mouth. If you smell... what the Rock is cookin'!"
