I went to a job interview and gave a demo lesson.

The interviewer was overjoyed. She kept saying how I was so much better than the previous 6 or 7 interviewees she had, she liked my teaching style, I didn't talk too much, I let the students speak, etc. But, there was a problem.

"You look very young, so I think we can't pay you as much as you want. These businessmen/women are very picky."
Rolling Eyes

So, what, are the students going to pay the company less because I "look young?"

No..perhaps she meant fewer students would enroll because they would have a hard time accepting such a young looking teacher as credible.....

Well, that is possible - however, the class we talked about was a set one. She was perfectly willing to offer me the same class, same number of students, just a different salary.

Of course, after 3 months of satisfactory performance as deemed by the students, I'd qualify for a raise!

I really don't see the logic. The class either has a teacher or it doesn't. I don't see why the pay would vary.

Don't settle for that BS. There are more jobs than applicants. Sounds like you did a good lesson. That puts you in a very very strong position.

Until another qualified teacher shows up and impresses the employer....then that very, very strong position will become a very, very missed job opportunity.... Laughing

What she told you sounds like a negociation....

Why didin't you speak up right away and tell her to stick it and walk out. If they want you to teach...they will pay you a decent wage.
Pay you less because you look young?!?!?!
Same amount of students are paying the school a full fee....unless the school is charging the students less because you look young!?

So the students pay the same, but you get less because she says that you look young. Oh yes. That's quite the logic. "Oh you look so young. Student not be please, but come anyway because you good teacher. Hmm."

What she was saying is this:

"You look young, stupid, and naive so I can screw you out of your fair wage." Laughing

Don't even look back.

Exactly. If she wanted you that badly she'd pay for it. Keep looking.

At fist I agreed with you, but after a few minutes I realized that she is using what I call klogic: Korean logic.

First, Korean are superficial. Its not whats on the inside, but the outside; you should judge a book by its cover.

Second, Koreans give more respect to elders. In Korean, "tangible respect" translates into "money. "

Conclusion: If a group of businessmen and housewives walk into a classroom and the teacher has a clean face and a breast milk moustache, they will finish out the month and go down the street to another school.

Just like Koreans dont want a Black person explaining a subject, they dont want a kid either.

And that's why it's stupid. Don't hire the person in the first place.

(1) She's either negotiating your salary down (young, naieve, easily pushed around) or
(2) You're really are too young for her clientel's image of a 'teacher'.

Either way, this is the wrong job for you. Look elsewhere. And by the way, many of us older teachers get the reverse BS: "You too old, palents wanta younga teacha, la, la, la."

Yup. Smile, nod and/or shake hand, say, "Well have a nice day. Thank you.", stand up, and leave.
