The new Apple cell phone is all the talk in the States. But is it seriously different from any of the newer Korean cell phones? |

Yes and no. iPhone has a very good web browser and operating system, and it looks damn cool. The LG Prada has the same tech but the software is garbage in comparison. The touch screen and the LCD are probably made in Korea and assemebled in China like all the other phones in the world.
iPhone only a 2.5G phone too so its broadband internet (non-wifi) is garbage. Hopefully when the iphone launches in Korea it will be version 2.0 compatible with the impending 4G networks and some sort of deal with cyworld and digital TV. |

Indeed it is. It might have a cool user interface, but otherwise it's inferior to even the lowest end phones here.
1. It's using ancient 2G technology. 3G has been in Korea already for years and they're already rolling out 4G networks here.
2. You can't send photo (or videos for that matter) messages.
3. No digital mobile TV.
4. No Video-Conferencing.
5. No GPS.
6. It's a new platform -> No products available.
7. ..not sure, but if it requires you to use ITunes, like the ipods do, it's an annoyance. |

Look at the size of the US and the size of Korea. The US doesn't even have 100% analog/digital cell phone coverage yet. Look at the broadband speeds that SprintPCS offers, EVDO. Its only in major US cities.
Cingular has an exclusive contract with Apple on the iPhone so for the next year or 2, Apple doesn't have to worry about it.
Then again, US cell phone companies rape their customers with the rates and fees. With that much money, you would think they could afford to upgrade their networks. |

You're...pretty much wrong on all counts:
It actually is a 3g phone: AT&T is just being shitty about upgrading their networks
You can email your photos, but the exclusion of shot mail was a bit strange. Again though, emailing them may be more powerful.
This is an american phenomenon, and the Iphone would probably have it if america had dmb service in general
It does have GPS
No apps available? Are you joking?
Itunes isn't an annoyance. That's a matter of taste. |

The prada never really had the same tech. Apple bought the company that made their intelligent touchscreen technology. No one else has that. |

Pfft AT&T is more concerned with regathering their monopoly than actually serving their customers. They are horrible, big brotherish (they *helped* the NSA wiretap scandal), and have NEVER really been a good company. I'm with Gizmodo; I wouldn't support At&t at the expense of not having an Iphone. |

BTW just a point of order, AT&T IS NOT the "old AT&T" better known as the bell system. AT&T was bought out by one of their spinoff companies, Southwestern Bell AKA SBC, they just kept the AT&T name
but yeah the old monoply is coming back as SBC owns the old Pac Tel, Ameritech and BellSouth which were created in the breakup |

iTunes an annoyance?
Do you seriously use windows media player?
I don't think VLC would cut it here, nor any of the other open-source players.
I'd like to know what you want to see for media capability. |

Where did you find this info? I haven't seen this kind of info anywhere. It'st true they probably release a 3G model in Europe etc., but it doesn't mean they already included the necessary tech for it in the American model.

But it doesn't have it currently, which makes it inferior to Korean phones. Also I didn't mention DMB, but just digital mobile TV in general as I know there are different standards out there. What standard are you using in the us.? Or do you mean you don't even have mobile tv yet?
It doesn't.

It's a different and new platform, so there is no ready-made software available for it. It also doesn't support Java and doesn't have publicly available software development kit for it, which means it's pretty much a closed platform.

I think most of people find it cumbersome compared to direct file copy to a usb device. |

Man, here we go again. Koreans taking credit for what ain't theirs.
The iPhone breakdown seems to go like this.
Touchscreen technology Apple (USA)
Touchscreen film technology (Balda/Optrex) (Germany/Taiwan)
Xscale chipset Marvell Technologies (USA)
Touchscreen glass Toshiba (Japan)
Bluetooth Audio chip Wolfson (Scotland)
Processor - ARM (Cambridge, England) (which licenses chip design/architecture technology to manufacturers such as Samsung and many others).
Bluetooth, CSR (England)
Flash Samsung (Korea)
GSM Amplifier, Skyworks (USA)
Voice/Data chips, Infineon Technologies (Germany)
iPhone Sensors, STM Microelectronics (Italian/French)
Future suppliers for iPhone 2 chips/flash hint at Broadcomm and Intel (USA); Broadcomm may already be inside the current iPhone. I'd be surprised if Texas Instruments didn't have a few gizmos in there as well.
All this aside, have you been asleep the past six months? The "heart and brains" of the iPhone is its software, Mac OS-X. Last time I checked that was still Apple.

I have to admit it's pretty sad that American and Canadian companies (i.e. Nortel) develop 3G (and upcoming 4G) telecommunications networks for places like South Korea, yet economy of scale factors have (so far) prevented them from covering their home turf adequately. And yes, AT & T do suck but I'd switch to get an iPhone anyway. Still, TV is the last thing I want on a mobile device so it's no big loss. The iPhones pros by far outweigh its carrier's cons. |

How is Itunes any more of an encumberance than WM11?
Apple just released a COCOA development kit
On the subject of apps, I should have asked what you're considering to be an app, because it already does what most smartphones do just using it's included software.
The GPS is a live connection to google maps and turn by turn directions. It's more of a pseudo GPS but I don't see how it gets the job any less "done".
No, America really doesn't have live mobile television yet in any standard. Yes, it's sad, but again, not apple's fault.
On the subject of Java, it's possible, as it's already running Youtube obviously, and I"m thinking that youtube was a "tide-over" until 3rd party apps hit. I think the exclusion of java has more to do with the fact that Java has always been funky in Safari.
Anyways, not a rabid apple fan boy. I'm typing this on an HP, and like I said, I'm not even getting an iphone; and while there are valid disagreements, all of this ridiculous nit-picking is just contrarianism towards a pretty sweet product. Give it a rest. |
