Ailing PC Needs a Diagnosis

Hey all.

I'm here to request some help figuring out what's wrong with my cheapo POS system at work.

It's a 50,000 won system that I added a cheap vid card before I started using it. The specs:

MB: Cheapo VIA Socket 478
CPU: Celery D 315
Ram: 512MB (256x2) PC-3200
VGA: Radeon 9200 AGP
ODD: Combo
HDD: 80GB IDE / 250GB IDE for TV show back-up
PSU: Micro-ATX 300w
OS: Pirated XP Pro SP2 English

The problem: Starting Tuesday, when I came in, it wouldn't power up. It would show the power-on light on the front, but a red error light was also lighting up. No power was getting through to the keyboard, but it was going through to the mouse. NO BEEPS of any kind were heard.

I unplugged it, restarted it, repeated this about a dozen times. No avail. I go to my first class and come back. I hit the on button and it powers up no problem. It's a little slow for a few minutes, but after 10 minutes it's working fine at it's normal blazing speed.

Any ideas what might be wrong? I thought at first the PSU may be too small, but a PSU calculator on the net showed the system should only need about 200w, so no problems there. Now I'm thinking it may be a motherboard issue.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like something may just be unseated (causing an intermittent problem).

1st, try to remove and reseat all the cards and the RAM. Check to make sure the power cables are all firmly seated as well.

It is an intermittent problem (it went away after a while) so it may be hard to diagnose in a hurry. This will be trial and error troubleshooting.

I'll try this tonight after I'm done with my work for the day. I can't risk having it not turn back on and I'm stuck without a computer for the rest of the day!

While your in there blow out or vacuum all that dust, clean up the fans.

Maybe use some alcohol in the connectors.

Sounds like the mainboard is going south. Save all you can.

I came in this morning, tried to turn it on only to have the same problem.

I pulled out the video card and RAM, then put them back in, making sure they were good and tight. Then I pressed the power cords firmly in on the motherboard. After that, plugged everything back in and it powered up with no hassles.

Hopefully that's all it'll be and I can make it until February.

I was going to say it sounds like unseated RAM.
