This is just about the perfect filler material for nothing week following exams. An episode lasts about 45 minutes - just enough time to get the DVD player set up, write a few terms up on the board, and enjoy. They were really, really following it carefully. And apparently Daniel Dae Kim's Korean really sucks.

In any event, I'd strongly recommend it if you're looking for filler lessons at the end of the term.

I'm assuming you didn't use a version with subtitles.

What episode did you use?

What terms did you write you write up?

Did you translate any terms?

I'm at a middle school, I'm all for watching this but I want them to do more than just sit and watch something but I'm not sure how to add something to make it more meaningful.

Hey, good on you for being so dedicated but.....perhaps Yu Bum Suk is in the same situation as me. At my public school the students have been finished the curriculum and all of their final exams for about a week now. Our principal told us to do 'activities' with them for the remaining two weeks. I'm sorry, but I'm just about all used up. My creativity is gone until next year. Thus, I showed one class 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' in English with Chinese subtitles. They loved it and I didn't have to battle through a lesson with kids who know the year is already over. Maybe you are in a different situation.

Alot of the teachers in my school start lessons for next semester. And next semester, when they finish finals in late November or early December, then you have 3 weeks of pointless classes.

I can't believe how hooked I've got my students on this. I showed episode six to some classes and most of them were just enthralled. One of my classes found a way to download the other episodes and watched 1-5 on their class computer in all their spare blocks this week, and some other students just stopped by to borrow my DVD player for the afternoon (I have no other classes).

I was also suprised by how my students really don't like Daniel Dae Kim and his character. They think he's ugly, 'no romantic', 'dirty man', and they're always making fun of his pronunciation, sometimes relying on the English subtitles to understand him.

At any rate, here's the Episode 6 hand-out I made, minuse the pics, if anyone's interested.

Lost

1. Lost is the first major American mini-series to feature Korean-born actors, Kim Yunjin, a Korean citizen, and Daniel Dae Kim, an American citizen born in Busan. Kim Yunjin plays the role (역할) of Kwon Sunhwa, or Sun and Daniel Dae Kim plays her husband Kwon Jinsoo, or Jin.

2. Sun is the daughter of a very rich Seoul businessman. Jins father was a fisherman and his mother was a prostitute (매춘부). Jin works for Suns father; he told her father that his parents were dead, and he won her fathers favor (시인) by being an excellent employee.

3. Sun and Jin are flying from Sidney, Australia, to Los Angeles, America, when their plane crashes on a Pacific (태평양의) island. Only 48 passengers survive the crash. No one knows where they are, and the passengers have to take care of themselves with few supplies (공급).

4. Sun can speak English very well, but she hides this from the other passengers and her husband. Jin cannot speak English at all. At first they do not get along with (사이좋게 지내다) the other passengers very well. However, Jin has useful fishing skills, and Sun is good with herbal (약초의) medicines; in the end they prove very helpful to the other passengers and get along with them much better.

5. The episode The House of the Rising Sun focuses on Sun and Jins past life. We find out that both are keeping dark secrets (어두운 과거). Jin has been doing gangster (악한,깡패) work for Suns father, assaulting (심한 공격) her fathers enemies for him. Sun has had an affair (불륜) with her ex-boyfriend from university, and Jins mother has contacted her and extorted (현금 등을 갈취하다) money from her. Parts of this episode were filmed in Korea.

6. What do you think of this TV series portrayal of Sun and Jin? Does it seem realistic? Do parts of it not make sense? Is anything inaccurate, and if so, what?

이 드라마에서 Sun과 Jin이 어떻게 묘사 되었다고 생각하나요? 그것이 현실적인가요?
이해되지 않는 부분이 있나요? 부정확한 것이 있다면 무엇인가요?

I showed the first episode to my classes on Friday last week, thinking I could show them 6 tomorrow, only to find out that tomorrow they're doing physical examinations. In any event one of my Fridays class is already past episode 6 in the downloads they've been watching. In the end I decided 6 as a starting point would be more interesting and relevant, since as far as I know it's the first American drama of its kind to focus on the lives of (South) Koreans.

I saw some episodes on late night T.V. There's a scene where Jin and Sun are fighting and it gets a little rough. Then Micheal( black guy from Oz) intervenes. He tries to break up the fight and Sun slaps him across the face.

Although I've never heard or seen this myself I heard that this sometimes happens when a Foreigner intervenes on demestic violence in Korea

I think its a great show.My favorite character is Locke.

I just walked by a teacher-less class to which I showed an episode of lost during third block today and it would appear they're now in their fifth straight hour of watching lost episodes today.

They show it on C.G.V. Monday night starting at 12 midnight and going to 2 in the morning. By showing the late night episodes in the day you're helping the kids catch up on some much needed sleep.

I've seen the D.V.D. in department stores. Eventially you'll have to find a new rabbit to pull out of the hat. Enjoy it while it lasts
