Mission Statement
Vision - Mission - Ethics
The Theosophical Society in America:
-has a vision of wholeness that inspires a fellowship united in study,
meditation, and service.
-encourages open-minded inquiry into world religions, philosophy, science, and the arts in order to understand the wisdom of the ages, respect the unity of all life, and help people explore spiritual self-transformation.
-holds that our every action, feeling, and thought affects all other beings and that each of us is capable of and responsible for contributing to the benefit of the whole.

I went on a date with a liberal woman to The Theosphical Society of America Seattle Chapter located on Seattle's Capital Hill. It's very near the overweight woman from Heart's house. It was somewhat interesting.
We talked about a Lebanese Muslim man that made art and poe-tree around 1910. He was a liberal Muslim like Salmon Rushdie. They talked about how he was like Blake and how popular he was at New York City cocktail parties and how great his Paris inspired art was.
I thought there might be something to this "Theosophy" business because there was a Jewish man in a wheelchair present and when he found out we were honoring a Muslim, it looked like he was not only going to rise up and walk over to the podium but he looked like was going to punch somebody as well. Talk about a miraculous recovery.
They didn't have any coffee, just a bunch of weak tea. I kept having to go to the espresso stand outside. No smoking either. The facility was well fashioned and the people were well dressed and well mannered. If you can have a conversation with Unitarian, do so. They can have good conversations although this was not a Unitarian gathering but just barely.
I've never gone back but none the less I have a fond memory of this place that combined the name Bill Cosby's fictional TV son and philosophy to make their own unique mark in the world. |

They're a pretty decent organization. When you dig into their ideas, it's a mishmash of Hinduism, Buddhism, and New Age stuff, which works for some people.
J. Krishnamurti, their "world savior" ended up turning on them and trashing them and became a famous guru who tried to dispatch the idea of people relying on gurus. He's been one of the most influential people in my thinking. |
