I've got middle school students.
Have to do this camp thing.
Can't only play games, so thought I'd do a song or two.

Does anybody know any songs that are either interesting and / or current?

Try "Book of Love" by Magnetic Fields. It's pretty good. Not VERY easy but not so hard they couldn't get it. I plan on using it; hopefully it works.

actually middle school students really like 60s pop and corny ballads.

My love by westlife is really popular with the boys. Don't know why by Norah Jones is popular with the girls.

Also try things like 'hey baby' by Bruce Channel or the updated version by DJ Otzi.

Beatles is popular too.

Try "fox on the run" by the sweet or "Saturday Night"by the Bay City Rollers. 60's 70's tunes are pretty catchy.

She's a great big son-of-a-b!tch,
twice the size of me,
see the hair on her belly
when she goes to take a pee,
she can suck, f@ck, drive a truck,
drink a case of beer,
oh Nellie, put your belly close to mine.

Truck drivers love song

Micheal Jackson is good for middle school students, if you can stomach it. Most of his songs have enough repetition that they aren't too hard to pick up. My students love the song "Heal the World," and it's cute listening to them sing it.

Yellow Submarine is also always a crowd pleaser.

"You Are My Sunshine"

The original depressing version, and not just the happy chorus they only taught us in elementary school

Yeah, great song for teaching that invisible "pacing/rhythm " of the English language. I have it on karaoke, self produced. You can play most of them by downloading the player and downloading songs from my site.

Lots of the usual, ymca, that's the way I like it, beatles, britney , hip hop but also Korean translated into English. If anything, a good way for you to learn Korean also! I just uploaded an Epik High song which I love....

Music is great for camp with smaller classes of entirely enthusiastic kids. I've no qualms about getting my guitar out and singing, but usually I download the songs and do gap-fill, other things with the song. I've used (and will continue to use) all the following:

Shiny, happy people - REM/B52s

Nothing else matters - Metallica

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

She's Leaving home - Beatles

In my life - Beatles

The scientist - Coldplay

California Dreaming - Mamas and Papas

Can't take my eyes off you - Franki Valli

Beautiful - Christina Aguilera

Take me home - Sophie Ellis Baxter

This used to be my playground - Madonna

Right here waiting for you - Richard Marx

I'm not in love - 10cc

About a girl - Nirvana

Come as you are - Nirvana (give a prize to the kid who can spot that Kurt's lyrics to this song are deliberate self-contradictions)

Don't cry - Guns N'Roses

Others that I've forgotten and will post if I recall..........

I love teaching these Korean kids songs- they have so much fun singing pretty much anything you throw at them, provided you can carry half a tune. So far, I've taught them "Mr. Brownstone" by Guns n Roses, "Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a Beatles song, Christmas carols, and "Jump Around" by House of Pain.

How about a song by The Doors?
Jim Morrison has a crisp voice that's easy to hear - well, except when he's screaming. Very Happy

The Doors? GNR? Why don't you guys suggest James Brown and get it over with already?

Seriously, give 'Welcome Back' by John Sebastian a try; under 3 minutes, it's got a bit of slang, a lot of colloquial language that they actually have to learn, and a great melody.
