|
|
Hi,
I've been in Korea for almost 3 years now. I am thinking about moving to JeJu Do for a year.
Does anyone have any experience of living on JeJu? What's the expat/foreigner scene like? Is it grim in the winter?
I usually eat Korean food but like to have some western food occasionally, are there any western restaurants? Is there a live music scene?
Is it expensive to live on JeJu?
Cheers |

i live on jeju, and seems that a lot of foreigners like living on jeju, especially if they've lived seoul first. jeju is good for outdoorsy types and 'settled' people.
there are a fair number of foreigners, but the scene is fairly small, with two/three regular bars everyone goes to. it can be a little clique-y.
the thing to be aware of is that jeju is NOT a 'sub-tropical paradise' the autumn is the nicest time of year. winter really sucks. there's nothing to do and its cold and super windy. at this point, summer still hasnt come. its been raining and raining and raining....the mainland is much warmer/sunnier than us at the moment.
there is some western food, but its definately limited. the only fast food is kfc and mcdonalds. there is an indian restraurant that is okay and a mexican place that sucks. pizza is abundant though (pizza hut and dominos as well) and there are some restaurants that have 'western food' on the coastal road, theyre fairly pricey.
sometimes there is live music, but its few and far between. there's one foreigner band and i've yet to see a korean band perfom (maybe i'm not informed)
the upside is that jeju is not very polluted and if you can get clear skies it is quite scenic. when its nice there's things to do like hiking, climbing mt. halla and going to the beach.
mostly i would say its a nice place (ive heard the koreans are a lot friendlier than on the mainland) but can be a bit boring and it can be frustrating not having a big city to escape to. (during the spring and summer seasons it becomes really difficult to get off the island because everything gets booked up with school trips.)
i dont know. its all about what youre into. if you want to be fairly quiet and outdoorsy, this is the place for you. if you want face paced, city, music scene whatever...jeju would leave you wanting. |

I'm considering Jeju for my next contract.
How difficult and expensive is it to transport your own household goods - furniture, etc. to the island from the mainland? |

jeju did not seem to expensive。。。 seemd like about Seoul in costs。。。
Ok if you have a car you are set- just load everything on / in car and take the ferry to Jeju - there ya go you are done... OR just taxi / move all your stuff to the nearest ferry- mokpo/busan/incheon and ferry away you are done
Maybe you could even rent a car in the main land with a big company that had a branch on jeju that would allow you to return it...
As to the state of Jeju well it was long ago 2004- 2006 subsumed by the adumbrating shadow of the indomabtble
KNIGHTERRANT LORD OF JEJU
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h310/poolord/DSC04443.jpg
Face ME The NEw LOrd Of JEJU!
And yet I left it behind a burnt and razed land where every halla bomb orangeee tree was splintered and the stump burnt and all the wells poisoned by my ever consuming glut of a belly
BUt even in this destruction I brought English Nobility to the Land...
Wut u got is around 300 native English blabber boys
Also u have sort of a red neck country thing going with naked boys swimming country style I had to get a picture as it was classic tom sawyer:
(not work safe if a bare arse boyo offends u ha ha little silly punks ...)
http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/5906/boyalll3hi.jpg
You aint got no one else to talk too ... Seogwipo got some kinda English service but Jeju city aint got nothing... On tyhe oterh hand Jeju pepole LOVEYOU there aint no dum fat Army goons who run around lookin for booze and ladies
And fore u army guys say shut up civi Know that I had to suffer through ur nonesense inOkinawa where those EVIL guys wrecked my rep while in the Marines- had one shop keeper PIss oFF ready to fight in Okinawa just cause I was a Marine
B ut Jeju is free of Marine Hell Hounds and Army mules so the peole know you are a nice person if you are white... or black as there are no native Africans there ether (opps sorry to all the legit Nigerian business men reading)
Wut more can I lecture on Jeju to assist you....? Hmm well you can see soccer amtches in asogwipo...also there are two new huge department stores in Soegwipo ok well 3 yrears old now... nut I would say Jeju city has more going on and more sk00ls and thus white peole there.... but if u roolz in koreaan u can find friends in segwipo... Hmmm wut else can i say on jeju... ahhh in the winter there are times the road is snowed over so you must wait to cross the mountain area or go around by beach route.... hmmm let see Jeju also has wind surfing/ surfing ... I saw some surfers in Jungmoun but seemed lik the waves were boring... then again it was not a storm.. my fave time swimming is in typhoons I had a great time swimming in storm waves in Jeju by the SEgwipo beach。。。
so to sum up jeju is good if you:
are da bob at korean do not desire a hige base of English speakers
need to live in a hike/bike paradise
want to marry a hanyo water woman
(I would ahve but they all seemed a bit old for me)
want to be and absolute movie star in tperhaps the safest place in the world
Do not mind being on an Isalnd previously enslaved entharlled and commited to English surfdom by

Yes, strange bunch down on the island. The ex-pats in the 'big smoke' seem to be more open minded. I've met many a good North Amer. up here, but I was lucky if I met a couple down on Jeju. I think the island attracts the wrong sort. To the o.p. not the greatest ex-pat community, unless you like terrible live music. But I enjoyed the locals, and the scenery was top. Though the winter months were some what boring unless you like ultimate frizbee. |
I agree |

Beyond Vague. What do they do? Sit around talking to toad stools? Are they a cult? What is up?

unless you wet your pants thinking about beaches that are easily topped in any other given country, jeju blows. |
