I'm flying back to the States next week for my father's wedding. I'm the best man. I've already got him and his new bride a nice handmade Korean paper lamp, but it's not enough. And I think it lacks imagination.

So this weekend I'll be heading back to Insadong and maybe some other spots trying to find that 'perfect' gift before I head home. Obviously there is a lot of pressure here. I want something unique, memorable, and Korean. My budget is probably topping out at 100-150,000 won (that plane ticket wasn't cheap).

Any suggestions? besides a couple hanbok outfits....

Seriously...buy your new mom some jade. A pendant or a necklace. Your dad??? I don't know what to buy my own father, let alone yours. It sucks to shop for your dad. Get his size and get him a couple of suits or something. Really nice wallet? I bought one here and it's lasted me 9 years.
Modded PS2? WII?

I think traditionally, cash is gift... although that probably won't work so well.

Nice bottle of soju or other variety of Korean liquor? Asian dinnerware? Some picture of hanging scroll with hangeul on it? Jersey of his favorite Asian athlete? (haha, bad joke).

A clock that they can hang on their wall. Always a nice wedding gift, romantic and all.

thought about that. I'm flying into Houston though so I might as well just pick one up there to save space in my luggage. (bad joke)

that's actually a good idea. hadn't thought of that. would there be any problem bringing 2 or 3 bottles of this stuff through customs? I know you can buy liquor at the airport but soju is probably like 15,000 won there, so will they have a problem if I bring it in from outside?

You can take 40 oz (about 1.18 liters (1180ml) ) duty free. (3 * 500ml bottles (1500ml) would probably not be a problem.

No problem in your checked luggage. Pack them in bubble wrap (from your local stationary shop) or inside your socks so they won't break.

They WON"T let you carry it into the cabin with you.

Good idea. Korean wedding ducks are used in traditional wedding ceremonies, because ducks mate for life. They represent the bride and the groom.

Ekuboko and Cwemory are right, get the ducks for something traditional for a marriage. I had a traditional marriage ceremony and my best friend carried a wooden duck during the procession.
