any suggestions would be so much appreciated.
a friend is coming from japan to visit for a few days. she wants to tour downtown seoul. she needs a place to stay in seoul, but on the cheap. what is central to insadong, museums, ganghwamun, etc. that is cheap? any hostels, etc? especially websites to places and/or phone numbers would be terrific. or suggestions on how i could track down a good place.
thanks |

When I was between jobs and looking for a place to stay for a week, I called Seoul Tourism- they have lists of hotels, hostels, etc. based on price range and location.
The number is either *1330 or 1330 or 02 1330 or *02 1330 or something like that... anyway, they're great! |

there are quite a few love hotels in the jongno area (off the main road) that run 30-40,000 won per night. no need for a reservation or anything -- just show up and there are plenty to choose from. there is also a japanese sauna/spa in myeong dong that goes for 15,000 per night (exit 9 -- u will see the sign right outside). not sure about any hostels ... i've never bothered with them as love hotels are so cheap. hostels are useful in cities like london or new york where a crappy hotel with a shared bath will run you $120 a night. |

Another good area is right across from the main entrance from Changdeokgung Palace. In the little alleys there are several small tourist hotels that only charge arount W30,000 per night. It's also walking distance to Insadong.
Here's the address of one we stayed at last November.
Beewon Guest House
28-2 Unni-dong, Jongno-gu, South Korea.
DIRECTIONS
By Bus:
Get on 602-1 bus at Incheon airport and get off at Changdeokgung bus-stop. This will cost 7000 won and will take 1hr 30 min ). You can be picked up right here if you call us.
By Car:
If you want to come here by yourself, go straight and turn right (you can see GS gas station) and go straight and turn right at Kukmin Bank. It is quite easy to reach really!
By Subway:
Take a subway number 1,3,5 line Jonglo3 station, 7 time outlet. We are 3 time outlet to a subway station number 3 line, Angugyeog Station. Then we are 5 ?8 min walking in Donhoamun direction. We are located opposite Donhoamun side LG oil station.
Sorry I don't have the phone number.

I've stayed at the Silloam Sauna overnight. It's W10,000 and a decent place to crash for one night. I wouldn't recommend it for longer than that, though. It's behind Seoul Station. There are large sleeping rooms on the fifth floor. They provide blankets and little rectangular pillow blocks. It helps if you're a sound sleeper, since there is usually some noise/commotion and it's dimly lit all night. Take a bottom bunk and crawl in head first if the light bothers you. |

I tried Beewon. My shower wouldn't work and the front desk is closed at night. I don't mind the shower not working. What I do mind is that there was no way to ask for a key to another room to take a shower. The front desk should be 24 hours. |
