Do they have summer vacation in the Korean school system or do they go to school year-round?

The summer break is the shorter of the two. Usually 4-6 weeks from late July until late August.

However, if you are working at a private institute (hagwon) you can almost guarantee that your workload will drastically increase during this period for summer intensives.

The winter break is the long one, usually all of January and February. Again, expect to have boost in your workload if you're at a hagwon.

Hope this answers your question.

Yes, if time off to relax and breaks from regular teaching as to catch up on your prep and non-teaching work is important to you, then public school is the choice option.

In a hagwon, it's 50 solid weeks a year of class with it being rare for any class to be canceled. It's a grind and often there is not enough time to do all the extra prep, evaluations, plans, creating homework, and meetings. You're looking at 30 teaching hours a week plus 10 to 20 hours a week of unpaid non-teaching work which is quite rigorous.
