I taught the CES Cambridge series in China, and in the Starter book they had an activity with the alphabet where students would match the letters with other same sounding letters (A/J/K). I thought it was really cool; photocopied it, and have since lost it. I'm trying to make sandpaper letters that are the same grit for the same sound. I'm having some trouble classifying all the sounds:

A/J/K

B/C/D/E/G/P/T/V/Z

Q/U

I/Y

H

O

R

W

But what about: l, m, n, f, s, and x?

To me they sound like they start the same, "eh', but I'm not sure. How would you sort them out?

M and N are nasal consonants.
That means you can't say either consonant while holding your nose.
That's why a cartoon character suffering from a cold makes B's and D's instead of M's and N's.

How about pairing voiced and unvoiced consonants:
B with P
D with T
V with F
G with K
J with CH
Z with S

There are two tests for voiced and unvoiced sounds which I know of:

1. Put your hand on your throat. If you feel a buzz, it's voiced; ifyou don't, it's voiceless.

2. Try to whisper the sound. If you can, it's voiceless; if you can't, it's voiced.
If you try to whisper a voiced consonant, you get the unvoiced match instead.
For instance, if you try to whisper "bad," you will get "pat."

You will have trouble with X because it consists of two phonemes--the K sound and the S sound.

Tomato, thanks for the tip.

Here's the Cambridge info (found it in my 'organized' pile) for anyone else interested:

/eI/ AJK
/I:/ BCDEGPTVZ
/aI/ IY
/e/ FSXLMN
/ju:/ QUW

Misc: HRO

Anyone else got sandpaper ideas??
