I'm doing a paper on the subject and wonder if you guys have any books you would suggest or articles that are well done.

Would these books be available in English? Where could I get them here in Korea if they are in English here....

I can always ship from Amazon.

Haven't done much reading on the subject, but one blogger put together a nice bibliography of material on the Gwangju Uprising: http://populargusts.blogspot.com/2006/05/bibliography-of-kwangju-uprising-in.html

His blog has a few nice write-ups on different aspects of the massacre, too, and is worth a look.

I mentioned this to a friend of mine who's right into all these aspects of Korean history, and who has actually studied the Kwangju Massacre, visited the Memorial on a few occasions, and talked to a number of people who were there and who survived some unbelievable brutality on the part of Chun Doo-hwan's thugs...
He recommends that you pick up a copy of:

The MAY 18th HISTORY COMPILATION COMMITTEE of
KWANGJU CITY: The May 18th Gwangju Democratic Uprising.

by Lee Kyung -soon and Ellen Bishop (Translators)

This book is 'straight from the horse's mouth' so to speak and contains a fairly extensive (for a 147 page book...) bibliography. Since the book was first published in 1998, there have been at least 4 editions printed; the most recent my friend has was released in 2002.
There is more material available now, even from outside (Red Cross, foreign residents of Korea who followed the event, and US Military and Intelligence sources...). The aforementioned book, however, is probably the best place to start.

And, if you've never visited the MAY 18th Memorial, DO SO...the video presentation, and photo exhibition that shows - in vivid colour - the absolute brutality and repression of that time, will be something you will never forget...Be warned, this IS NOT for the faint of heart!!!

Hope this helps; if you need any other info my friend suggests you try to contact the committee directly (Phone: Kwangju 606-5527-7) or check the website of Kwangju City...

Happy Hunting!

Korea on the Brink: From the "12/12 Incident" to the Kwangju Uprising, 1979-1980
John A. Wickham
Institute for National Strategic Studies
National Defense University

Massive Entanglement, Marginal Influence: Carter and Korea in Crisis
William H. Gleysteen Jr.
Brookings Institution Press

Both of these books are written by prominent Americans who were there, the USFK commander and the US ambassador, respectively. They both frankly discuss how things went wrong, the dynamics of Korea at the time, who was doing what behind the scenes to manipulate whom, and the what-we-Americans-should-have-done analysis from their own steps (and occasional missteps). I recommend both these books for anyone interested in these periods.
