|

Yup, did a search. Couldn't anything specific.
I have my new contract on my desk. I haven't signed it. Start date is mid-october.
I'm a level 2 EPIK...er.
If I do a 100 or 120 hour TEFL, I will move to a level 1. Actually, I just have to show that I have started the course. I plan on starting it in mid-August.
My question, for anyone with experience, is this...
If I sign the contract as it is, (level 2), can I retroactively, but before the effective date (start date) of the new contract, go back and ask to be changed to a level 1?
I don't mind waiting, but I am afraid my school will not understand. They are very supportive, and I don't want to change that. However, is is an extra 3.6 mill this year, and it puts me one year closer to level 1+, which is another 2.4 mill for that year.
Anybody have real information or first hand experience?
Thanks. |

According to the rules in effect for 2007 you will receive a bump in category and pay a month following the date on your certificate when you completed the course. There is not retroactive assignment of a category giving you back pay...I sent you a PM with more information... |

I don't know about EPIK, but with GEPIK you have to finish the course in order to move up a pay level, not just start it. As tob55 said you will receive the pay raise the month after the completion date on the certificate. |

This appears to be the current standard nation wide at this point, but that could change depending on a given local Education office and their desire to have more control over their own situation... |

Sorry, I think I was a little unclear. I'm wasn't asking for pay retroactive. I was more concerned that even with TEFL in hand, EPIK would claim that because I signed the new contract at level 2, that I would have to stay at level 2 for the whole contract period, and not gain level 1 status until next contract. |

Yes, I think the signed contract would be in effect for the whole year. I don't think they'd look too kindly on being asked to alter some terms part way through. A new contract would need to be submitted to Immigration as well I think, so I'm sure there'd be lots of paperwork hoops to jump through.
But, each province, school, job, etc seems to be different, so you might get lucky... |

In the GEPIK contract it clearly states that you can be bumped up any time during the contract period 1 month after completing the 100 hr cert course..I'm gonna start next week and finish sometime in August, I hope (I'll be in LOS...so who knows). Upon completion, I'll be bumped up to GEPIK max salary...I bet my school will love that...

GEPIK contract is nice to inlcude that information. EPIK is basic, but they are related enough, that it might be worth claiming anyways..
Well, I have to either sign or not (I will), by monday, so if I have to, I will rob a bank and get 200,000 to register for a TEFL on Friday..... |

I don't have a copy of the new EPIK contract but it should have a clause something like:
Article 8(Salary)
9. If Employee obtains further qualifications such as a Masters degree or TESOL certificate with over 100 course-hours during the contract term, the elevation of the level and raise in salary, if applicable, may take place from the following month as of the completion date. However this shall be limited to the next one level per year.
Make sure that it does and then you have no worry.
Note however that they will only bump you one level per year.
You can however get a salary increase (100k per month) for the completion of a TESOL cert. |

Not sure of your posts wording, Tom...A bump from level 2 to level 1 is 200,000 per mo, and that's what would happen if you obtained a cert, right? |

The wording is not mine - it is a quote from the contract.
What is says is that you can't jump from lvl 3 to lvl 1 in the same year.
If the OP got a level up prior to the TESOL cert up he would still get 100k more for the tesol and then a level up again the following year.
If he was already at level 2 and did not change levels already this year he would change levels with the TESOL cert. |

100,000 is a jump from 3 to 2 but, you get 200,000 for 2 to 1. I was just trying to clarify is all... |

I'm not sure how to clarify the issue.
EPIK labelled me a level 3 when I started. However, at orientation, they said that if a person had already submitted their prior experience evidence before arriving in Korea, a person could be a level 2 without prejudice. I was. my contract was changed, and I worked as a level 2 all year.
So, as far as I consider it,
I started as a level 2;
and now I want a level one.
I do understand the inability to skip a level. That just makes snese. |

Oh, and isn't a change from level 2 to 1 300,000 per month?
I make 2,000,000 a month as a level 2. (100k provincial allowance not inlcuded.)
Doesn't EPIK list level 2 as 2,00,000 per month, level 1 as 2,300,000 per month, and level 1+ as 2,500,000 per month?
Provincial allowance is separate and doesn't change by level. |

If you were level 2 for your last contract and get your TESOL you should get the level up in the month following your proof of certification.
Just confirm that you have a clause similar to the one posted above in your contract to ensure that you will get your level up. |
