Hey there,
I work at a public elementary school and was just told that for 3.5 weeks during the summer I will be in charge of telephone teaching. I am to call ~70 Grade 3 students/day and "teach" them for 3 minutes each.
Has anyone had any experience with this? I should mention my school is giving me zero guidance as to what I am supposed to do. These students know basically no English.
Any ideas? Sorry if there is already a thread on this...my computer kept freezing up when I would search the topic.
Thanks for the help! |

Yes, I am doing it one hour a month. I just ask them questions and grade them on how well they speak. Things like:
What day is it?
How's the weather?
What's your name?
How do you spell your name?
What's your favorite game?
etc. |

Your Korean co-teacher must have seen the advertisement for Kwaks fun telephone talk-talk on the TV.
It is outside the contract and outside the policy of the MOE.
Just say NO and end that crap now.
If they want you to spend 3.5 hours a day with G3 students they can shedule a regular camp for them in the school during school hours.
BTW, 3 minutes of "TALK TIME" = closer to 5 - 7 minutes or more per call.
ring, ring,
Hello, is Mi-sa there?
Yobo say yo....
Is Mi-sa there?
Yobo say yo....
repeat 10 times, then wait while the parent finds Mi-sa.
Then try to get Mi-sa to actually say something.
After wasting your 3 minutes, hang up and try again with the next kid.
So now your 70 calls per day are up to 8:06 hours and climbing AND they will show NO appreciable results over the course of the 3.5 weeks.
SAY NO.
Simply REFUSE.
If they persist then you should insist that they will require a new teacher in 30 days time.

Just do it.
It will be fun.
Pretty soon, all public school will require FTs to do telephone teaching during summer/winter vacation. Goody! I can't wait.
What next? FTs will be required to clean the school bathrooms? |
