Planning to go hiking at Soraksan (depending on the typhoon!).
I'm thinking I will leave for Sokcho tomorrow morning, check out the city and spend the night there.
Hike on Soraksan Tuesday.
Now I've been reading about the mountain but can't figure out exactly where I should hike. Any recommendations? Are there places to stay near the mountain also? I was thinking I'd spend the day hiking and catch a late bus back Tuesday evening. However, one of my co-workers said I should spend at least two nights there.
Cheers. |

Looks like you will be in luck with having no typhoon as there doesn't appear to be one heading towards Korea, but it could be very rainy.
Lucky you, you're off on weekdays right now. Sweet, go enjoy it while you can.
Is it Christmas yet? That's my next week day off! |

I went ot Soraksan in june and stayed there for a few nights...the weather stuffed it for me a little so i didn't get in the Big hikes i wanted to do but did 3 smaller hikes which were really cool...
1. The Piryong waterfall hike, takes about 2 hours return...easy going most of the way. Chilled out at the waterfall at the end...really nice small hike.
2. Ulsan Rock, takes about 4-5 hours return. tough at the end but it is a good climb and the view at the top is amazing. Some great photos climbing up through the rocks.
3. Pisundae/Kumgangul hike.4 - 5 hours return. the hike to Pisondae was really really nice. really easy and just strolled along till i got to the big rock pools. After that climb up to the cave(굴) which most people don't do. tough going but once again, the view at the cave is amazing....
The times I have given are times that are at the most. just taking it all in and enjoying nature. You could probably cut an hour off each if you wanted to.
I just stayed at a motel about 2 kilometres from the entrance to the park. it was called Korea Motel, across the road from the national park office. Cost 30 000 won a night. the bus from sokcho to Soraksan stops right in front of the motel...owner was super friendly and can speak some english.
I wanted to do some of the big hikes but weather stopped me but it was great all the same. |

just because: is it necessary to make a reservation at the motel (or any motels) around there, or is it okay just to go. I am planning on going there the first weekend in november...
