So I had a Korean speaker call immigration and am still waiting for a response from immigration, but I thought I would ask here to see if anyone can help me.

I am working in Korea now and my contract expires on the 24th of August. I am leaving the country for 2 weeks on the 8th. While I am back in the States I wanted to apply for a new visa with my new employer for a contract starting on 9/1.

I just wondered if I can apply to the consulate while I am in America (and technically still under my current contract),or will I have to do a visa run when I retrun?

any advice would be appreciated...

others may have better advice on this one, but having dealt w/a public school contract in the past, i learned certain interesting items such as: your school is responsible for your whereabouts while you are under their visa sponsorship - and they don't always approve of you leaving the country close to the end of a contract - it appears as if you are leaving early - so make sure you have their permission to do so -

it doesn't seem like you are going to be able to apply for a new visa while still under the old one - especially if you've left the country and told immi you'll be back under the same visa? is that what you are planning to do?

this is different than if you were here in korea at the time and was making an application just to change places of employment.

again, others might tell you something different, but if it was me, i'd tell the new school you have to wait for your old contract to finish before they start processing your new visa app - considering how immi can screw things up - why push your luck?

just tell your new school you'd prefer to keep things nice and legal and whatever else, you won't work until your visa is proper. they can fly you in if they want on a tourist visa and then do a visa run, but you can't teach until everything is set up proper.

better be safe than sorry -

i'd be interested in hearing other comments on this.
