|
|
.......pretty good, so far. I'm in my 4th day. Lots of hours put in installing and tweaking.
I really like the GUI. It's a lot more slick and intuitive than XP.
I 'acquired' a good working version of Vista Ultimate (tm) . Apart from more than a few cases of software incompatibility, which I see as being understood as we are dealing with an OS for the future here, our old versions of our favorite software should not be expected to live forever, I'm more than pleased. I feel at home with Vista already. I feel it's working on my side.
The gadgets on the Windows sidebar are cool. I'm using the system monitor and the BBC radio player at the moment. They will evolve to be even cooler as they are user created.
Stability. A few games I installed have crashed. But Vista was able to come out of the freeze and bring me back to desktop and give me a reason why the game crashed. Better than XP there............ I would like all the games I have to work on Vista.....afterall, Sony make all their Playstation games backwards compatible, but I understand that this is a new OS and that new games will be designed for it soon........where are you Crysis??!!
There are bugs. I couldn't play avi. video right after the install. Not even VLC would play avi. I decided to install the Vista codec pack. Not something I liked doing. MS should have all codecs covered in Media Player 11. But the codec pack worked so all is good.
Anything else? Oh yeah. It does eat up the RAM. Run uTorrent, Media Player and IE7 at the same time can bring the RAM usage up to 800mb. I even saw all my 2GB of RAM used when I opened a 200mb JP2 picture of a Hubble pic. I would say that if you are doing any video intensive then 4GB of RAM is very desriable. But vista seems to be able to handle all jobs which your system is maybe not up to without crashing. I think it's a fair bit more stable than XP.
Last thoughts?
This is an improvement on XP. I think most of you will like it as long as you don't see it as a do-everything-right-now OS. It won't run everything designed for XP. But when everything is designed for Vista.....you'll love it. |

Thanks for the info. I still think Vista is a long way from compatibility. I am extremely pleased with XP and won't be switching until support is no longer offered for it. Then again, did I ever or do I ever use their support option? |

So when everyone is enjoying the forthcoming big games in glorious DX10 you will by happy plodding along in DX9?
I will be buying a DX10 card soon. Probably a 8800 GTS 340mb. Around 300,000. I want to be ready for the big new games. As well as play my older games better.
Progress is relentless CL. If you want performance then it doesn't pay to be loyal to any one product. |

Ah My dear Eamo,
WHEN...and I stress WHEN....games come out that I wish to play that are DX10 compatible, then I will look into the difference between DX9 and DX10. If it is a significant difference, then I will most likely upgrade. I just don't see any games that I play coming out soon that require the dx10 or that show a significant difference with dx10. Ultimately, it is all about what you need it for. I only play 1 or 2 games online. Right now, I don't need dx10 so I don't bother with it.
That isn't to say I will NEVER upgrade; you guys know me better than that. It is just to say that right now and in the immediate future, I don't see a need to go out and get VISTA and another graphics card (my 7900GTX is still pumping along strongly). |

Same with me. I just don't see a need to upgrade right now. XP and DX9 do everything I need. I am probably going to buy a DX10 card as my next purchase just so I have the option of upgrading to VISTA if I want.
I'm looking at the 8600 GTS XXX. Looks pretty good, more than enough for what I'd be playing. I'm still playing MOH and some games from the late 90s.

Yeah, upgrading right now seems like a real pain in the a$$ for nothing, really. I got the Vista Transformation Pack (link below) on my XP and its pretty as anything.
Vista gives you nothing right now, and it slows your games (if they're even compatible). It was the same with XP when it first came out. Give it the summer and then I'll probably upgrade and NOT pull out my hair in the process 'cause they'll have everything worked out by then.

I upgraded to Vista Home Premium on my PC and my laptop. Everything is peachy on my desktop, except Nero 7 is not compatible yet(?). The only issue I have with the laptop is that there are no update drivers for the Nvidia Go 6800 video card yet.
Anyway, so far so good. It definitely gets some cool points. I think that I am happy . |

DX10 is still a ways off. Heck, we have only seen the first gen of DX10 cards. Ploding with DX9? No, DX9 will run games faster, but it may not look as good as 10. May, I say. For now.
I will get Vista, no doubt. It will not be until the games arrive in force and the cards are more mature in their 2nd or 3rd gen.
Good review though eamo...thanks. Yeah, it had better be "better" than XP...how else could they justify forcing people's hand with DX10, etc...? |

Vista is nice on the right machine, still its improvements are mostly poor ripoffs of Os X 10.4 which has been around for over a year. Either way in the windows world, Vista is a definate improvement esp for multimedia apps if you have a kickass computer. |

|

Hey, do yous know any arcane, secret methods for getting Vista to show thumbnails of photos?
(I've got basic put on my new machine. Didn't care either way... until I came to check my photos. ... I can't tell which one is which! 'Give me my thumbnails back!') |

In your photo folder, or where ever you keep your pictures, there's a pull down menu (on the upper left side) called "Views." Choose one of the "Icons" (XL, L, M) or "Tiles" and you get your thumbnails back. |

Erghm, yeah, thanks for that.
Yes, I did try that already.
No, it still doesn't work.
I wonder if that's the difference between Vista Basic and the other versions ...?
Anyway, still no thumbnails for me.
Any other ideas? |

That's strange. I'm using ultimate version, but I think that it shouldn't matter if you use ultimate or home version. Okay, here's how to disable thumbnails. Check if "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is checked or not. It should be unchecked. Taken from HERE.
Quote: |
By default, Windows Vista generates a preview thumbnail for nearly every file when viewed in Windows Explorer. Yes - thumbnails can be really useful for quick photo viewing, but disabling these thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer can really speed things up.
Disabling Vista's thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer is really easy to do and should really improve response time when browsing around your drives.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Disabling thumbnail previews in Windows Vista Explorer usually takes less than a few minutes
Here's How:
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Choose All Programs, right above the search box.
3. Click on the Accessories folder and then the Windows Explorer link.
4. After Windows Explorer loads, click on the Organize button and choose Folder and Search Options from the menu.
5. In the Folder Options window, click on the View tab.
6. Under the Files and Folders heading, check the box next to Always show icons, never thumbnails.
7. Click the OK button.
From now on, no matter which view you're using in a folder in Windows Explorer, no thumbnail will be generated. This should greatly increase the speed at which you can move between folders and may even speed up copying and other tasks in Windows Vista. |

SeoulFinn is right. Thumbnails should be automatically activated. I'm using Vista Ultimate and I have thumnails for all my photos. My movie thumbnail are often black and annoyingly can't be reset. |
