I'll only be there for 3-4 days total. The only thing I've got on my list is Bran Castle, but I do want to do some horseback riding and hiking. Anyone have any suggestions or experiences there?

Brasov is definitely worth a day. Very pretty town, and much cooler, temp wise, than Bucharest.

My friend who lives there took me hiking at a camping area up a very rough road between Bucharest and Brasov. Nice trails, uncrowded. Sorry I can't remember the name.

Yea Brasov is the vacation and leisure capital but the mountains didn't seem that big. I spent most of my time in Cluj where you can drink alot at the college bars.

Not sure about horses, but I did a lot of hiking there. Check out Busteni. It's just down the road from Brasov. Beautiful mountains there, jagged peaks.

Sinaia is good too. It's more touristy and resortlike, but the mountains around it are good.

Up north is the Bicaz Gorge. Not sure if you'll have time, but that's amazing.

As far as towns go, Sighisoara is a must see. Great medieval town.

Have fun! Surprised

Thanks for the tips. I ended up not going to Bran since everyone there said it was just a bunch of hype. I went to Brasov, Sighisoara, and Tirgu Mares. I liked Brasov the best. Sighisoara was too touristy in the old town and the mountains weren't that great. Brasov had great accessible hiking and the huge old town really felt more cohesive and there were less tacky souvenir shops around than in Sighi. Tirgu Mares was just a flop. Though it was almost completely devoid of tourists..

Didn't get to do any riding, even though it was dirt cheap in Sighi - 10 euro!!!

I lived in Brasov for 3 months it was great! Don't forget to visit Peles Castle (I think its a bus ride away from Brasov) its much nicer than Bran Castle.
