I'd suggest you stay off the topic of women since MissSeoul might come along and get the thread axed by the mods for commenting on how cheap and easy Taiwanese women are. |

Songtan I'm considering heading over too. After a brief spell teaching there I reckon

1) Is there alot of racism in Taiwan? |
-significantly less than here.

2) Are they more foreign friendly? |
Yes- at least outwardly.

3) Is it possible to get a public school position with a degre and celta? |
I'd like to know that too.

4) How's the weather? |
Miserably hot, humid, rainy and uncomfortable in summer at least. Apparently fairly pleasant otherwise.

5) Are the kids easier to teach? |
I reckon they're the same or worse.

6) Are Tawainese girls more open to dating foreigners |
Yes, from what I can tell. probably midway between Korea and Japan on that scale. |

I know I posted this topic about Japan, but I would like to hear some comparisons from teachers that taught in both places.
1) Is there alot of racism in Taiwan?
Not at all. Probably the least racist land around. It's an island with a mix of nearly all sea-going countries because of it's importance as a port for traders and pirates in the past. Heck, they (generalizing of course!) even welcomed and cherished their Japanese occupation!
2) Are they more foreign friendly?
Most definitely.
3) Is it possible to get a public school position with a degre and celta?
Don't know about public schools, but I worked in several private bilingual schools as a homeroom teacher.
4) How's the weather?
Humid and cloudy. You always know when a typhoon is come'n 'cause that's the only time when you can see the distant mountains, a clear blue sky and inhale fresh air.
5) Are the kids easier to teach?
Same as any ol'students I suppose. Depends on how effective you are as a teacher.
6) Are Tawainese girls more open to dating foreigners
( I ask this because I do like having girls as friends also, and if they won't date you they probably won't be your friend either)
Yes, be on your best behavior and some may come across as sweet, innocent and inexperienced but....don't be surprised if they know more than you. Very.....passionate is probably the best way to put it.

Well, I typed out a fairly long reply, but I got logged out.
Anyway, to be short, this topic comes up on a near-daily basis over on the Taiwan forum: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewforum.php?f=12
The Dave's Taiwan forum kind of sucks, though, as people ask the same questions over and over, so to get some background on Taiwan, browse:

Taiwan is nice, and I'd love to move there. However, to teach in public schools you need to be qualified to teach back home (B. Ed in the States). If I could find decent buxiban (private school) work, that'd be fine, but as you're supplementing your income with private lessons, it takes a while to build up contacts. Also, in Korea you get paid airfare and accommodations, and this isn't always the case in Taiwan. You could find yourself in a hostel for a month as you look for a job/apt. The start up costs in Taiwan are a little much, so even though salaries are comparable I think you'd save more here.
If I decide to do a year or two in Taiwan, it'd be for the cultural experience---been to Taiwan twice, really loved. There's racism, of course---Asians are masters of ethnocentrism---but Taiwan is much more open and internationally aware than Korea. That's subject to change as you leave Taipei, however. A nice thing is that Taiwanese come in many shapes, sizes, and shades. In Korea it's important to look and act the same all the time, whereas I didn't stand out as much in Taipei. It was a nice change. |

If you dont mind the intense air pollution that goes right down the west coast then by all means go. Thats what you get when you burn zillions of tonnes of coal to make electricity, the sky goes from blue to a permanant grey colour. Everyone gets sick there and foreigners get it either when they are there or shortly after they leave those polluted, noisey, hot concrete jungle shores. Granted, the east coast is beautiful but jobs are scarce in Hualien, Taitung and Ilan. |

Taiwan and Thailand bear very little resemblance either culturally or climatically. The money in Taiwan for teaching is way better ie 50,000 nt v 30,000 baht (average wages per month for foreigners teaching english). |

1: There is some racism in Taiwan. If you are white you will likey not have to deal with it, the darker your skin, the more likey you will.
2: Taiwan is a foriegner friendly place. The bigger cities have accessible costco locations and such. Taipei is probably the best though the expat community in Kaohsiung is really involoved with the locals and I never felt unwelcome at any event or place.
3: Possible, but likey not probable. Legal public school jobs in Taiwan are hard to get. The only people I knew teaching in public schools were all on spousal visas.
4: In Taipei, a lot like Vancouver or Seattle, lots of rain but the summers can be sticky hot. In the south it is warm year round and very warm this time of year. The air pollution is considerably worse in the winters when the winds change.
5: The kids are easy to teach though the vast majority of teaching jobs are for young kids. Teaching the very young ones is not everyone's cup of tea.
6: Taiwanese girls seemed open enough to dating westerners to me. But the only Taiwanese girls I knew were one I met at foriegner hangouts or the girlfriends of friends.
Taiwan is a nice place overall. The biggest downsde is the pollution and in some places the lack of selection for things like restuarants and such. Most teachers in Taiwan are there for lifestyle rather than money. Financially Korea loks like a better deal. |
