Have any of you signed contracts before coming to Korea? What is the norm for this. Most contracts are signed upon arrival am I right? Anyone have any bad stories for signing contracts before coming over? Thanks

It is common to sign and them come over, as long as the school is reputable (cough, cough), and everything looks above board. |

Most are signed from abroad. That's the norm. |

To do everything LEGALLY you must sign the contract while you are abroad and then send the contract and other required documents to Korea.
The school will then apply for your visa confirmation number. (takes about 4-7 days).
They send you the number and you take that along with your passport, a photo and some money to the nearest Korean consulate and get your visa.
Then you get on a plane, fly to Korea and start work (often within hours of arriving in Korea).
If you have your visa before you get on the plane then you have the backing of the labor board and legal standing if there is a problem.
People who are NOT in Korea already and who fly over on a tourist stamp, sign the contract, then begin work while waiting for the visa process are doing so ILLEGALLY.
Benefit to the hakwon is that they can dump you in a heartbeat if there is anything they don't like (like your appearance or accent) and you have NO LEGAL recourse. |

I swear ttompatz is an internet bot with a massive database But he is correct, yet again.
Another thing to watch out for is getting here and them having you sign another contract. Don't! |
