I was looking for the phonics thread, but can't find it...so here goes.

If you're using a book...like Up and Away in Phonics, you can just make enough copies for your students of whatever page you want to concentrate on.

First, do the exercise. (fill in the missing letters).

Then have your students cut the page into cards. I think there are 9 or 12 per page, depending on where you look.

Have them place the cards face up on their desks (in random order).

Tell them what pattern you are playing ...(X,Z,H etc.)

As you call out the words, the students turn the appropriate cards over.

First one to get the pattern wins.

You can play many rounds, just have the students mix their cards and start over.

If you don't have a book:

Make a grid (4 x 4 or 5 x5 or however many you want to have) draw some pictures to match the vocabulary you want to practice.

Make enough copies for the class and then do the same as above.

This idea comes from the elementary public school textbook series, but I just adapted it for use with phonics vocabulary.

Cheers

If you want something different....

Pair the students up. Have them put their hands on their heads.

They should have 1 set of cards, face up, between them.

As you call out cards, they try to grab the right card.

The one with the most cards at the end is the winner.

Confused

This is a bit hard on cards however, and students have been known to argue over who was really first.
If they are arguing, rock -paper- scissors is always helpful.

This game also comes from the elementary school text.
